Baseball Wins Slugfest Over Amherst College, 27-12

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 22, 2023) – The Western New England baseball team scored 14 runs in the bottom of the second inning, well on their way to a 27-12 victory over the Mammoths of Amherst College on Wednesday afternoon from Trelease Park, the first game of the home schedule for the Golden Bears.

How it Happened:
After a quiet first inning, the remainder of the contest was anything, but quiet ad Western New England would break open the contest with a 14 run second inning to quickly take a commanding lead. Aaron Cole's at-bat would be the first to score a run after an error by Sam Robin would score Jake Gerraughty to open the scoring a 1-0. John Bova would connect on a two RBI single up the middle of the diamond as Western New England would continue to score. A bases clearing double by Cody Waterbury would send Paul Villecco, John Bova, and Kohtaro Shimada to the plate as Western New England took a 6-0 lead with nobody ot in the inning. After a pitching change, Jake Gerraughty would reach on a fielder's choice, Aaron Cole would single through the middle, Kohtaro Shimada would reach on an error, Paul Villecco would be walked, CJ Willis would grab an RBI single, and Cody Waterbury delivered his fourth and fifth RBIs on the inning on a single to left field as Western New England would quickly open a 14-0 lead and never look back. 

The Golden Bears would mount a 16-0 lead after John Boa collected an RBI ground out and CJ Willis smacked a double to left field before Amherst could put their first runs up on the board. The Mammoths, already down 16-0, scratched across three runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning to make a small cut into the Golden Bears lead. Western New England would respond with a five run fifth inning after Jake Gerraughty walked, Henry Schowerer was hit by a pitch and Aaron Cole finished the job with a bases clearing triple to right-center field to score three more as the Golden Bears would put across their 21st run of the game and lead 21-4 after five innings of play. Amherst would make the game interesting in the top of the eighth after putting up a six spot in the inning, coming away with four RBI singles, though it would not be enough as the blue and gold would respond with their own six run eighth to secure the victory. 

In the 8th inning, WNE's Zach Snow would reach on a fielder's choice, Jake Loftus would single to second base, Jake Gerraughty would double down the left field line to collect two RBIs and Aaron Cole would finish the inning with a double to right field to put up the 27th run of the afternoon for the Golden Bears. WNE's Tyler Achatz would finish the top of the ninth for Western New England, shutting down Amherst and sending the Golden Bears to a huge 27-12 victory. 

Around the Horn:

  • Cody Waterbury and Aaron Coleg filled the stat sheet on Wednesday, combining for seven hits on 11 at bats while collecting 11 RBIs between the two. 
  • Western New England stepped to the plate 44 times, scoring 27 runs on 18 hits, collecting 22 RBIs while being walked ten times in the game. 
  • Paul Villecco, CJ Willis, Cody Waterbury, Jake Gerraughty, and Aaron Cole would all collect doubles for WNE while Cole collected the lone triple for WNE in the game. 
  • SP Matt Lauria went the first four innings giving up three hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out four. 
  • Both Lucas Kamoen and Todd Grammatico made their WNE debuts at Trelease Park on the mound, while Zach Drewry and EJ Quint made their debuts in the field. 
  • Amherst had two batters collect three hits in the game.
  • Western New England has scored 37 runs in their last two games. 
  • This is the most runs in a single game for the Golden Bears since scoring 32 runs against Keene State College in 2019.
