Baseball Bounced Out from CCC Tournament Following 3-2 Loss to Roger Williams

BEVERLY, Mass. (May 12, 2023) – The Western New England baseball team dropped their third game of the season to the Hawks of Roger Williams University, this time, in the most important game of the season, as WNE fell 3-2 to the Hawks in an elimination game, ending their 2023 campaign.

How it Happened:

Western New England would fall behind early after the Hawks would take advantage of a throwing error by Jacob Hobart, giving Roger Williams a 1-0 lead after one inning. WNE would lead off the inning with a triple from John Bova, though would see nothing come of it. Western New England's high-powered offense had fizzled out through the CCC tournament, banging out just four hits on the day. Western New England would load the bases in the top of the third inning though were unable to take advantage of the opportunity, leaving all three runners on base. 

Western New England would tie the game in the top of the sixth after Cody Waterbury erupted for WNE's second triple of the game. Sean Jamieson would work a walk while Jack Loftus would grab a sacrifice fly to score Waterbury, evening the score at one. Roger Williams would take exception to the run in the inning by WNE as Jack Morin would collect a home run to right field in the bottom of the inning, getting the Hawks their second run of the game and second lead of the afternoon. 

Battling back, Western New England would score their second run of the game when John Bova collected a home run to left field to tie the game at two in the top of the seventh inning. Just as they did in the sixth, Roger Williams would grab a run in the bottom of the inning, take a 3-2 lead when Matt Massaro singled to center field. The bats of the Golden Bears would not show for the final two innings of the game as the Golden Bears would fall by a final sore of 3-2, eliminating themselves from playoff contention. 

Around the Horn:

  • Through three games, Western New England grabbed 14 hits in the CCC Tournament, getting five each against Salve Regina and Suffolk, while pounding out just four against Roger Williams. 
  • John Bova led WNE with a triple and home run in the contest, picking up a solo RBI. 
  • The Golden Bears left 12 runners on base in the final game of the season. 
  • SP Jacob Hobart went the first 6.1 innings giving up six hits and three runs, one earned while walking one and striking out 2. 
  • The WNE offense would be dominated by Dan Massaro, who went thee first seven innings for the Hawks, giving up four hits and two earned runs while walking four and striking out ten in the win.
