Western New England Tops Clark 17-10 in 2019 Opener

Gamba (5 goals), Ward (2 goals, 5 assists) lead Golden Bears

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 23, 2019) – The Western New England University men's lacrosse team opened its 2019 campaign with a 17-10 victory over Clark University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Granger Field.

Top Performers
Junior Nick Gamba (East Islip, N.Y.) paced the Golden Bears offensively with five goals, while senior Jared Ward (Littleton, Mass.) recorded seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) and sophomore Matt Greer (South Windsor, Conn.) had five (1 goal, 4 assists).

Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) won 10-of-21 faceoffs and scooped up seven ground balls, while junior goalie Sean McCusker (Northport, N.Y.) finished with 11 saves.

Clark was led by senior attackman Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.), who tallied four goals and one assist.

Game Review
Clark scored the first two goals of the game, and the Cougars led 3-2 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Western New England took control of the contest in the second period, however, as the Golden Bears outscored the home team 5-0 to open up a 7-3 lead at halftime.

Sophomore defenseman Kevin Faustich (Seymour, Conn.) scored the equalizer 1:24 into the frame, and classmate Jared Newall (Stratford, Conn.) put Western New England ahead for good 34 seconds later before the Golden Bears tacked on three more goals later in the quarter.

Western New England continued to add to its lead in the third quarter, as Gamba scored three goals and Ward added two to help the Golden Bears extend their advantage to eight (14-6) heading into the fourth.

Clark outscored Western New England 4-3 in the final period, cutting the final margin to seven.  

Notes
• Western New England outshot Clark 55-42, but the Cougars held an 18-13 faceoff advantage.
• Clark senior goalie Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with 15 saves.
