Women’s Ice Hockey Sweeps CCC Weekly Awards

BIDDEFORD, Maine (December 13, 2021) – The Western New England University women's ice hockey team picked up two weekly awards for this week's CCC weekly awards, as announced by the conference office. First year Katie Cronin and sophomore Rieley Jessie-Gerelli swept the CCC women's ice hockey awards list, picking up player/rookie of the week and goaltender of the week, respectively.

The Golden Bears shined in their lone game of the week at the Olympia Ice Center on Tuesday, December 7 when they took down the previously unbeaten Rams of Suffolk University. First year Katie Cronin started off the first period with an even strength tally to give WNE the 1-0 lead. Cronin would go on to score a powerplay goal in the second period, as well as in the third period to give the Golden Bears their first ever win over the Rams. Cronin becomes the first in Western New England's women's ice hockey history to score three goals in one game, on route to a 4-0 shutout win over Suffolk University.

Goaltender Rieley Jessie-Gerelli kept busy between the pipes for the Golden Bears against the Rams, making all 47 saves on the 47 shots she faced. Jessie-Gerelli has now won back-to-back starts for the Golden Bears and picks up her second shutout of the season. In nine starts this season, the sophomore has made 372 saves, which ranks second in NCAA Division III. Jessie-Gerelli's .944 save percentage on the season ranks 11th in the NCAA Division III and 3rd in the CCC.

The Golden Bears women's ice hockey team will return to play on January 1, 2022 when they travel to Arcadia University for a first-time matchup between the two schools. The Golden Bears next home game will be on January 5th at 7:00 pm when WNE takes on the Pilgrims of New England College from the Olympia Ice Center.
