Golden Bears Women’s Ice Hockey Opens 2022 Schedule with 4-3 Setback at Arcadia University

GLENSIDE, Pa. (January 1, 2022) – After a near full month off from the ice, the Western New England University women's ice hockey met another first year program, the Arcadia University Knights, dropping a 4-3 decision after a late surge by the Knights lifted them to their second win of the season.

Records:

  • Western New England: 5-5-1
  • Arcadia University: 2-9-0

How it Happened:

Goalkeeper Luciana Robertelli made her first career start in a Golden Bears uniform on the night as Western New England took the ice for the first time since December 8th when they upset previously unbeaten Suffolk University in CCC play. Like they did on that December 8 contest, WNE pounded in the first goal of the game when Alyssa Murphy tallied an unassisted tally to give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead. Although the Golden Bears were outshot 13-5 in the first period, Robertelli came away with 12 first period saves. The Knights came away with a late goal with 1:08 remaining in the first period when Emily Wilson potted the first Knights goal to go into the first intermission with an even score. Western New England won the first seven of 11 faceoffs in the contest.

The Golden Bears would surrender the next goal of the contest 11:31 into the second period of play when Bridgit Terry netted a goal for Arcadia University to give the Knights the 2-1 lead. Western New England would fight back late in the second period, as the Knights did in the first, by scoring a tally in the last two minutes of the period to again even the score. Western New England's Allison Walker would net the typing goal off an assist from Erin McGlynn to even the score heading into the final 20 minutes of play. In the period, Robertelli made an additional 16 saves, while Knight's goalkeeper Jo Coates came away with two saves on three shots on goal by the Golden Bears.

Western New England would take the lead in the third period just 5:35 into the frame when Sydney Conte scored the third goal of the game for the Golden Bears to gibe WNE their second lead of the game. Katie Cronin and Emma Birmingham would grab assists on the play to give WNE a 3-2 lead. Arcadia University would quickly fight back as they were able to score two goals in 12 seconds to re-take the lead. Karahkwenhawe White and Morganne Dee would score goals for Arcadia to lift the Knights to a lead late into the third period. The Golden Bears would get an opportunity on the powerplay late in the contest when Bridgit Terry took a hooking penalty with 51 seconds remaining in the period though the Golden Bears were unable to slide a goal past Coates, who made 16 saves in the win. Western New England would drop their first game of the 2022 schedule by a final score of 4-3.
