Sordi's first career goal serves as game-winner

WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 11, 2018) – Sophomore forward Christina Sordi's (Bethlehem, Conn.) first collegiate goal early in the second half lifted the Western New England University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Westfield State University on Thursday evening in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

Top Performers
Sordi and freshman Autumn Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) both found the back of the net for the Golden Bears, while sophomore Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and freshman Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) recorded assists.

Making her ninth start of the season in net, senior goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) finished with five saves.

Westfield State senior defender Casey Rotti (Rutland, Mass.) accounted for the Owls' lone goal early in the contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Branna Hawley (Lee, Mass.) stopped eight of the ten shots that she faced.

Game Review
The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, as freshman Jenn Rennich (Bedford, Mass.) sent a corner kick into the penalty area and Rotti settled the ball before firing a shot into the back of the net.

The Golden Bears equalized in the 26th minute, when Smith took the ball into the right corner and delivered a pass back to Hathaway, who sent a shot inside the far post.

Sordi then scored the game-winner for Western New England in the 52nd minute after receiving a centering pass from Bruehwiler.

The Golden Bears held onto their lead the rest of the way, and Veilleux sealed the triumph with a save on a shot by Rennich in the final seconds.

• Western New England outshot Westfield State 18-15 and held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
• The Golden Bears are 6-2 in eight road matches this season.
• Smith (15 points), Bruehwiler (11) and Hathaway (six) rank first, second and third on the team in points, respectively.
