Golden Bears Equalize Late Before Settling for 1-1 Draw at Roger Williams

Western New England clinches home game for first round of CCC Tournament on Saturday

BRISTOL, R.I. (October 23, 2018) – The Western New England University women's soccer team equalized late in regulation before settling for a 1-1 draw with Roger Williams University on Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Bayside Field.

Top Performers
Sophomore Christina Sordi (Bethlehem, Conn.) tallied her second goal of the season with the help of an assist from classmate Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.).

Junior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) made six saves, including two in the second overtime period, to preserve the draw for the Golden Bears.

Roger Williams senior forward Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) put the Hawks ahead with a penalty kick goal in the first half.

Game Review
Roger Williams struck first in the 16^th minute, as the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick and LeMiere-Barnes converted the opportunity for her fifth goal of the season.

Western New England put a pair of shots on goal in the 18^th minute, but the attempts by Sordi and freshman Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) were both saved by Roger Williams freshman goalkeeper Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.).

Bruehwiler had another chance to tie the contest in the 31^st minute when she fired a shot off the crossbar, but the Hawks maintained their 1-0 edge at halftime.

Still trailing in the late stages of the game, Western New England finally broke through in the 81^st minute when Sordi beat Strassburg off a corner kick by Murphy.

Strassburg made one save in the first overtime period, and Lemekha stopped both of the shots she faced over the final ten minutes as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

• Roger Williams outshot Western New England 14-13 and the Hawks held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
