CCC Battle Between Golden Bears and Nor'easters Ends in 1-1 Draw

Bruehwiler scores fifth goal of the season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 20, 2018) - The Western New England University women's soccer team battled with the University of New England through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods before the game ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Suprenant Field.

Prior to the start of the game, senior captains Erin Grimes (Attleboro, Mass.) and Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) were recognized alongside their families for their dedication to the Golden Bears women's soccer program over the past four years.

At halftime, the 1998 women's soccer team was honored, marking 20 years since their historic 20-2 campaign.

Top Performers
Freshman forward Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) notched a goal in the first half of play, her fifth of the season.

Sophomore Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) took four shots with three on target.

In net, the Golden Bears split time with Veilleux collecting four saves and Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) making three stops.

Junior Katie Beaudoin (Coventry, R.I.) registered the only goal for the Nor'easters.

Game Review
Just 10 seconds into play, Smith wasted no time pressuring the Nor'easter defense with her first shot on goal, but sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Pannone (Prospect, Conn.) made the save. Pannone finished with five saves on the day.

UNE was also aggressive in the early moments of the period, but the Golden Bears defended them well.

The 0-0 tie did not break until the 30th minute, when Bruehwiler took a through ball from sophomore Mariana Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) and tapped it in to give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead.

The Nor'easters were quick to respond with a goal of their own as Beaudoin found the back of the net by herself at the 33:20 mark, tying the game 1-1.

The scored remained 1-1 for the next 45 minutes and overtime was needed to decide the contest.

Neither team budged in overtime as Pannone and Lemehka made four and two saves, respectively, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Notes
• UNE held a slight edge in shots (20-18), but the Golden Bears had six corner kicks to UNE's four.
• Western New England has played in seven overtime games this season.
