Softball Splits on Day Two of Florida Schedule

Clermont, Fla. (March 13, 2022) – The Western New England Softball team started the day with a loss to Wesleyan University-Conn Cardinals 13-2 in five innings of action. They finished off the day with a win against Mt. St. Mary Knights 8-5, where the Golden Bears scored on five runs just in the fourth inning.

Game 1: Wesleyan University 13, Western New England 2

The game did not start great for the Golden Bears. The first three batters were grounded out in the top of the first inning. In the Bottom of the first, Wesleyan recorded three RBIs before they reached three outs. The second inning went scoreless for the Golden Bears again while Wesleyan had five runs and 6 hits.

In the top of the third, the Golden Bears Taylor Keegan knocked one into center field for a double. Cori Rizzo recorded an RBI sending Keegan to home plate and getting WNE on the scoreboard. Wesleyan scored three more runs in the bottom of the third. The Golden Bears Lizzie Weston collected the last RBI for them for the game. It led to Madison Mason to advance to home. The Golden Bears had three straight strikeouts in the top of the fifth for the ball game. The Golden Bears lost to The Cardinals 13-2 to put their record at 1-1.

Inside The Diamond:

  • Western New England was led by Keegan who went 1-2, recorded an RBI and a run.
  • Weston also went 1-2 for the Golden Bears, and Rizzo recorded the other RBI of the game.
  • Western New England scored two runs in three hits on the game, giving up 13 runs in 16 hits.

Game 2: Western New England 8, Mt. St. Mary 5

Ava Hilaire started off pitching for The Golden Bears, allowed one hit and one run for Mt. St. Mary in the top of the first inning of action. In the Bottom, Kailey Carrano collected the first RBI which sent Kaleigh Blades to the home plate to tie the score up for the Golden Bears at 1-1. The second started with a walk for the Knights. with only one out, they hit one into center field and another up the middle to give them a spot on second and third base. Another walk gave the Knights one more point on the board to give them back the lead. The Golden Bears had two straight outs, and error, and a strikeout to close out the second inning. The Knights started the third the same way the Golden Bears ended the second. Blades was hit by the pitcher to send her to first base in the bottom of the third. On a passed ball, Blades ran home, while Dina DiBlasio ran to third. Lizzie Weston recorded another RBI that sent DiBlasio home to put the Golden Bears up 3-2.

The Golden Bears had a great fourth inning. Mt. St. Mary went three straight outs in the top, and WNE had five runs. Ines Baez Flores hit a single to third base while Alex Ferriouol advanced to third, Flores then stole second, and then the two of them reached home plate while Blades collected two RBIs. A few bats later, DiBlasio was on first and Cori Rizzo on third, Carrano earned another RBI on the day with a double that sent Rizzo to home base. DiBlasio then scored on a wild pitch and Carrano also scored before the final out of the inning. The Golden Bears were now up 8-2. The Knights N. Palmer knocked one out of the park to give them another point in the fifth while the Golden Bears had three straight outs. They did not score again the remainder of the game. The Knights had another run in the top of the sixth and then had two strikeouts and a ball that was grounded out in the seventh to finish the game. The Golden Bears won 8-5.

Around The Diamond:

  • Western New England's Kaley Carrano went 2-3, record two RBIs, and one run. Kaleigh Blades went 1-2, recorded two RBIs and scored on two runs.
  • Starting pitcher Ava Hilaire earned her first win today. She pitched in 5.2 innings, only allowed five hits, and recorded five strikeouts. Relief pitcher Megan Beebe pitched in 1.1 inning and recorded 2 strikeouts.
  • Western New England scored eight runs in seven hits on the game, giving up five runs on six hits.

Up Next: The Golden Bears are back in action tomorrow, March 14, for more double header action. First up is Millikin University at 10:15 a.m. and second is Washington College at 12:12 p.m. back in Clermont Florida.

Wesleyan plays Wisconsin-Platteville at 12:15 p.m. on March 14 and SUNY Cortland at 3:15 p.m. in Clermont Florida. The same day Mt. St. Mary faces off with Smith college at 10:15 a.m. and Utica College at 12:30 p.m. in Leesburg Florida.
