Softball Collects Two Big CCC Wins at Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. (April 13, 2022) – The Western New England Softball team had a huge double win today in CCC play against the Suffolk University Rams, coming back to win 4-3 in game 1, and winning the second ballgame 3-1, bringing their CCC record to 7-1.

Records:

  • Western New England: 17-8
  • Suffolk University: 14-8

Game 1: Western New England 4, Suffolk University 3

After three straight outs from the Golden Bears in the top, the Rams completed a run to go up 1-0 in the first inning. They added two more in the bottom of the third. Suffolk's Jolie Quintana collected two RBIs on a single to left field with the bases loaded that gave them a 3-0 lead against the Golden Bears. In the top of the fourth, WNE started to slowly get back in the ballgame. It started with a single up the middle from Kailey Carrano and then a single to centerfield from Alex Ferriouolo, they both advanced on a wild pitch, and Lizzie Weston had an RBI single while Carrano ran past home. Three straight outs for the Rams brought the game into the fifth with WNE still behind 3-1.

The top of the inning started with a Suffolk error that allowed Kaleigh Blades to reach first but was proceeded by two outs for the Golden Bears. Blades was on second, Ferriouolo was walked, and another Suffolk error gave Weston an RBI and another tally on the board for WNE, the score now 3-2. Ava Blanchard picked up two strikeouts in the bottom and held the Rams to no runs or hits. The Golden Bears took the game in the top of the sixth. With Taylor Keegan on second and Alyssa Poisson on third, Dina DiBlasio hit a single to center field RBI and Poisson made it to Homeplate on another error. They took the lead of the game 4-3, and after no runs completed in the bottom or in the seventh, won the Softball game against the Rams.

Inside The Diamond:

  • Western New England was led by Taylor Keegan who was 2-4 at bat and completed a run
  • Lizzie Weston compiled two RBIs and was 1-3 and Dina DiBlasio had the other WNE RBI.
  • Starting Pitcher Ava Blanchard pitched in all seven innings, faced 29 batters, allowed six hits and three runs, recorded 10 strikeouts and only two errors.

Game 2: Western New England 3, Suffolk University 1

The Rams were the first on the scoreboard again in the second game of the day. Their only run came in the bottom of the first. The Golden Bears tied it up in the top of the second, Alex Ferriouolo scored unearned before they picked up the last out. Taylor Keegan started the top of the third with a double to center field, then advanced to third after a Sac bunt from Kaleigh Blades and reached home that Dina Biblasio got the RBI on a single to second base. A nice double play in the bottom of the inning from WNE brought the game quickly into the fourth. The last run on the ballgame came from DiBlasio in the top of the fifth. She knocked a homerun over right field. This gave the Golden Bears another tally on the board. The final score of the game was 3-1 with the rams not able to complete another run.

Around The Diamond:

  • Western New England's Dina DiBlasio was a perfect 3-3 at bat, one being a homerun, and two RBIs in the second game of the day.
  • Alex Ferriouolo and Taylor Keegan completed runs. Lizzie Weston was 2-3.
  • Starting Pitcher Megan Beebe pitched in all seven innings, faced 28 batters, allowed five hits and one run with four strikeouts.

Up Next: The Golden Bears continue their road series Saturday, April 16. They are headed to Endicott College to take on the Gulls for a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. ballgame.

The Rams will be traveling to Providence, RI. Friday, April 15 where they will go head-to-head with Johnson & Wales University for a 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. start time.
