Softball Takes Down Colonels in CCC Play

MILTON, Mass. (April 30, 2022) – The Western New England Softball team traveled to Curry College to take on the Colonels on their senior day. Western New England defeated Curry in both games, 8-0 in the first and 5-2 in the second, bringing their CCC record to 12-4 before the final regular season game of their season.

Records:

  • Western New England: 23-13, 12-4 CCC
  • Curry College: 7-32, 3-15 CCC

Game 1: Western New England 8, Curry College 0

This game was all Golden Bears. After no runs were scored in the first inning, the Golden Bears started up the scoring for the game by putting up six runs in the top of the second inning. There was a lot of action to start of the inning. Lizzie Weston started with a single down the infield line. She advanced to second while Maggie Marquardt was up to bat, and advance to third on a throwing error. Amaya George also reached first on an error and earned a Sac RBI and then stole second. Following Paige Baca being walked, Alex Ferriouolo hit a double to collect three RBIs, and the last runs for WNE in the top of the second came after Dina DiBlasio hit a double to center field for two RBIs. This gave them an early 6-0 lead.

The ballgame went only to six innings. There were no hits or runs for the Golden Bears in the third, fourth, and fifth innings while Curry only put up one hit in those innings. In the last inning of the game, the Golden Bears added two more runs to their score. Taylor Keegan with a double hit started the play in the top of the sixth. Dina DiBlasio hit a single and Alyssa Poisson came in to pinch run for DiBlasio, and she stole second. Kailey Carrano completed the play by hitting a single through the left side for two RBIs. Those were the final runs of the game, and the Golden Bears defeated the Colonels 8-0.

Behind The Box score:

  • The Golden Bears' Alex Ferriouolo gathered three RBIs, completed a run, and had a double hit on the game. Dina DiBlasio added two more RBIs, also had a double hit, and was 2-4 at bat
  • Taylor Keegan was 3-3 at bat and completed two runs. Kailey Carrano had the two RBIs for the Golden Bears, and Amaya George added one.
  • Starting Pitcher Megan Beebe pitched in 5.0 innings and collected the win for the day, she faced 18 batters, didn't allow any runs and struck out four batters. RP Emilia Garcia closed out the game, faced four batters and had one strikeout.
  • The Golden Bears had eight runs on nine hits and allowed no runs on two hits.

Game 2: Western New England 5, Curry College 2

The runs came early in the second game. Dina DiBlasio hit a single after the Golden Bears already had two outs. Kailey Carrano proceeded with a homerun and two RBIs. They gained a 2-0 lead going into the bottom. The colonels also got on the scoreboard in the first inning. A couple of bunts and a Sac fly RBI made it a 2-1 game. The Golden Bears put up two more runs in the top of the second. Kaleigh Blades hit a double after an out, Paige Baca hit a single for an RBI after another out, and Dina DiBlasio hit another double for an RBI before their third out of the inning. The Golden Bears now had a 4-1 lead. The last runs of the game were completed in the fourth. WNE started the inning getting two quick outs. Two double hits from Alex Ferriouolo and Paige Baca led the Golden Bears back around the bases for a 5-1 game. The Colonels also completed a run in the fourth inning. Jillian Rogers who started with a walk made it back to Homeplate from her teammate Sienna Kulpa single RBI hit. With no runs completed in the remainder of the game, the Golden Bears ended up winning 5-2 to the Colonels after seven innings of play.

Inside The Diamond:

  • Western New England was led by Paige Baca who went 3-4 at bat, hit a double, added two RBIs and a run. Kailey Carrano hit a homerun, had two RBIs plus a fielding double play.
  • Alex Ferriouolo, Dina DiBlasio, Brianna Floyd, and Kaleigh Blades had a contribution to the Golden Bears win.
  • Starting Pitcher Ava Blanchard pitched in all seven innings and collected the win on the day. She faced 31 batters, allowed two runs, and four strikeouts.
  • The Golden Bears had five runs in 13 hits and allowed two runs on eight hits.

Up Next: The Golden Bears have their last regular season game Sunday May 1 to conclude a full weekend of games. They will be at Golden Bear Softball Park for their senior day celebration against the University of New England Nor'Easters at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Colonels had their last regular season game against the Golden Bears. They played a total of 39 games and concluded with a 7-32 season.
