UNE Pulls Away for 17-8 Win over Golden Bears in Opening Round of CCC Tournament

Phillips and Breen score three goals each for WNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 28, 2018) –
The sixth-seeded University of New England women's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half to earn a 17-8 victory over third-seeded Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at Golden Bear Stadium. 

With the win, UNE (8-8) advances to next Tuesday's CCC semifinal round to take on No. 2 seed Roger Williams in Bristol, R.I. Western New England's season comes to a close at 7-11.

Top Performers
• Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the way for the Golden Bears with three goals, five draw controls and two ground balls.
• Junior Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) also registered a hat trick, while sophomore Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) secured a team-high seven draws to go with three assists and one ground ball.

• UNE junior midfielder Korinne Bohunsky (Eliot, Maine) powered the Nor'easters with five points (three goals, two assists), a game-high nine draws, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.  
• Freshman Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) produced a game-high six points (four goals, two assists) and added five ground balls with three caused turnovers.

Game Review
Trailing 9-6 at the break, the Golden Bears cut their deficit to two (9-7) 45 seconds into the second half, when Phillips scored her third goal of the game on a feed from Ruby.

The Nor'easters responded with a 3-0 run, however, to stretch their lead to five (12-7). Camelo got it started when she buried a free position attempt at the 27:54 mark, and Bohunsky set up senior Jolena Lampron (Lyman, Maine) just over three minutes later to complete UNE's spurt.

Breen tallied Western New England's final goal of the season with the help of an assist from sophomore Kaitlyn Hutter (Stamford, Conn.) with 23:23 on the clock to close the gap to four (12-8), but the Golden Bears were unable to draw closer.

Lampron notched an unassisted goal with 21:56 remaining as the Nor'easters closed out the contest with a 5-0 run to extend the final margin to nine.

Phillips opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, and the two teams traded goals over the next ten minutes, with Western New England holding a 4-3 edge on a goal by Breen at the 17:22 mark.

The Nor'easters answered with a 3-0 run and outscored the Golden Bears 6-2 over the final 16:31 of the half to open up a 9-6 advantage at the break.

• UNE outshot Western New England 50-19 and held a 39-12 ground ball advantage.
• Led by Phillips and Ruby, the Golden Bears won 16-of-27 draws.
• Senior goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 19 saves in her final collegiate contest.
