Men’s Wrestling Sees Seven Ranked in New England, Three Regionally Ranked in First Preseason Polls

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 3, 2022) – The Western New England men's wrestling team, who kicks off their 2022-2023 campaign on Friday afternoon at the Ithaca Invitational, saw three regionally ranked athletes as announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), while four others were ranked in the top eight of their weight class, as announced by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA). 

WNE's Corey Cope gained recognition from both the NWCA and NEWA, being ranked 6th in the 133 lb. weight class by the NWCA, while being placed fifth in the NEWA opening ranks. The Quakertown, Pa. native won 14 matches in 2021-2022, collecting five wins by pinfall, two by tech-fall, two via major decision and four via regular decision. Cope ranks 5th in the NEWA individual rankings. Also ranked in the NWCA in the 174 lb. weight class is CJ Glaropoulos, who ranks 6th in the weight class. Glaropoulos collected ten wins a season ago, taking half those victories via pinfall, two tech-fall wins and two major decision wins. Glarapoulos ranks 7th in the NEWA individual rankings. Rounding out the NWCA rankings is Darby McLaughlin, who sits in the 197 lb. weight class, ranking 3rd. The junior was second on the Golden Bears a season ago in wins, coming away with 28 in his 36 matches. 13 of those wins can be credited via pinfall, one via tech fall, and a team high nine major decision victories. McLaughlin ranks a team best second in the NEWA rankings, only behind Coy Spooner of U.S Coast Guard Academy. McLaughlin was also awarded d3wrestling.com National Honorable Mention in the 197 lb. weight class.

Sean Monteiro cracked the NEWA individual rankings, taking the 8th spot in the 165 lb. weight class. The same can be said for WNE's Colby Reilly, in the 141 lb. weight class and Charles Maloy, in the 184 lb. weight class, who both sit in the 8th spot in the NEWA rankings. Rounding out the NEWA rankings for Western New England in the 157 lb. weight class was Lucas Pinzino, who sits in 7th place. 

WNE begins their season on Friday, November 4 at 3:00 pm at Ithaca College for the Ithaca Invitational.
