Golden Bears Snap Wentworth’s Nine-Match Winning Streak with 3-0 Sweep

Western New England claims sole possession of third place in CCC standings with win

BOSTON, Mass. (October 25, 2016) – The Western New England University volleyball team vaulted ahead of the Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) standings with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23) victory over the Leopards this evening at Tansey Gymnasium.

Top Performers
• Junior middle hitter Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) led the way for the Golden Bears, posting an impressive .423 hitting percentage with match-highs in both kills (13) and aces (five).
• Junior outside hitter Emmaline Chiodini (Saint Louis, Mo.) notched her fourth double-double in the last five matches and fifth overall this season with ten kills and ten digs.
• Junior libero Brianna Roath (Jackson, N.J.) was among three Golden Bears to finish with a team-high 11 digs.

• For Wentworth, freshman middle hitter Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) compiled a team-high seven kills without making an error in 13 swings (.538). She also chipped in with three block assists, two digs and one ace.
• Freshman outside hitter Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) added 11 digs, six kills, three aces and two block assists.

Match Review
• The back-and-forth opening set featured a late run by Western New England, as the Golden Bears reeled off six straight points following a 17-17 tie. Wentworth was unable to recover as the visitors claimed a 1-0 lead in the match.
• Western New England was forced to play from behind for much of the second set, as the Leopards led 5-1 early and appeared to be well on their way to evening the match with a 19-15 advantage late. The Golden Bears tied the frame with a 4-0 run, however, and pulled away with the help of another 4-0 run to take a 2-0 lead in the contest.
• Needing a third set win to stay alive, Wentworth trailed by just two (18-16) following a Western New England error. The Golden Bears responded with three straight points, however, before fending off a 6-1 run that allowed Wentworth to pull within one (24-23). Following a Western New England timeout, Chiodini ended the home team's comeback hopes and sealed the win for the Golden Bears with her tenth kill of the night.

Notes
• With the win, Western New England moved into sole possession of third place in the CCC standings. The Golden Bears and Leopards entered tonight's action with matching 5-2 records in conference play.
• Western New England also halted Wentworth's nine-match winning streak, which dated back to October 6. During the streak, the Leopards dropped just three total sets and posted seven sweeps.
• Chiodini has recorded 10+ digs in five consecutive matches and 11 times overall this season.
• Skibinski's .423 attack percentage marks the 12th time this season she has hit above .400.

Both teams will be back in action with non-conference contests on Thursday, as Western New England (17-9, 6-2 CCC) travels to Keene State and Wentworth (22-4, 5-3 CCC) heads to Maine Maritime.
