Men’s Basketball Rolls Past Curry

MILTON, Mass. (February 8, 2020) – The Western New England University men's basketball team rolled past Curry, 100-61, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon at Katz Gymnasium.

Top Performers
Junior guard Alex Sikorski (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led the Golden Bears in scoring with 18 points. Junior forward Zachary Tavitian (Milford, Conn.) had 17 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Tim Reilly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored 14 points and dished out eight assists.

Freshman Michael Ashley (Atlanta, Ga.) grabbed a double-double for the Colonels with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) scored 15 points.

Game Review
The Colonels got ahead in the early portion of the first half, taking a 9-6 lead just under four minutes into game. The Golden Bears answered with a 19-2 run over the next seven minutes, capped off by a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Antonio Brancato (Fairfield, Conn.).

A jump shot from Sardegna cut the Western New England lead down to four point with just over four minutes remaining. With the score at 27-23 in favor of the Golden Bears, Western New England went on a 17-5 run over the remainder of the half to take a 44-28 lead into halftime.

A jump shot from Tavitian pushed the Golden Bear lead to 18 points shortly into the second half by a score of 50-32. A layup from senior guard Nick DeGennaro (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) gave the Golden Bears a 21 point lead, their largest of the night at that point, with 16:25 remaining in the half. 

With the score at 60-44 in favor of Western New England with 13:12 remaining, the Golden Bears went on a 30-7 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 90-51 lead. A 3-pointer from senior Nathan Ramos (Auburn, Mass.) with 2:08 remaining gave the Golden Bears a 40 point lead, their largest lead of the night. The Golden Bears went on to win by a final score of 100-61.

Notes
• The 39 point victory is the highest margin of victory for the Golden Bears this season.
• This is the third game this season that Western New England has eclipsed 100 points.
