Men’s Basketball Falls to Gordon in CCC Quarterfinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 25, 2020) – The Western New England University men's basketball team fell to Gordon, 95-83, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Top Performers
Senior Eric Demers (Acushnet, Mass.) led the Fighting Scots with 36 points. Junior Parker Omslaer (Jackson, N.J.) grabbed a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Senior guard Tim Reilly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored 24 points and dished out seven assists for the Golden Bears. Junior guard Alex Sikorski (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while senior guard Mike McGuire (Garden City, N.Y.) finished with 17 points and seven assists.

Game Review
The Fighting Scots came out strong, taking an early 7-2 lead after a layup from junior Josh Crutchfield (Ladera Ranch, Calif.). With the score tied at 14, Gordon went on a 7-0 run to go up 21-14. A basket from McGuire stopped the scoring run. But the Fighting Scots answered by going on a 19-4 run over the next five minutes to go up 40-20.

The Golden Bears were able to cut the lead down to 13 points going into halftime. The Golden Bears came out strong after halftime and cut the Gordon lead down to four points after junior forward Zachary Tavitian (Milford, Conn.) made a 3-pointer to make the game 58-54 with 14:17 remaining in the game.

Gordon pushed the lead back up to 10 points after sophomore David Massillon (Lynn, Mass.) converted an and-1 opportunity midway through the half. A pair of free throws from Demers pushed the Fighting Scot lead back to 15 points. The Golden Bears got within eight points, but Gordon hit key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

• Eric Demers broke the CCC career scoring record during tonight's game.
• Gordon held a 47-30 rebound advantage.

Western New England (15-11) concludes their season. Gordon (13-13) advances to the semifinals, where they will take on Nichols on Thursday evening.
