CLERMONT, Fla. (March 21, 2019) – The Western New England University softball team went 1-1 in a pair of games on Thursday at Hancock Park, with a 6-5 loss to Trinity College and a 5-4, extra inning victory over Farmingdale State College.

The Golden Bears fell behind 6-0 through four innings against the Bantams, before rallying to pull to within one late.

Trinity opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by senior Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.). The Bantams added three runs in the second as sophomores Gillian Birks (Westport, Conn.) and Jenna Thomas (Orange, Conn.) both recorded RBI singles, and freshman Maura Keary (Fairfield, Conn.) scored on an error.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore Samantha Witmer drove in another run with an RBI double, before scoring on a hit by Erickson that made it 6-0 in favor of the Bantams.

The Golden Bears fought their way back into the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on four walks and three hits, including a two-run single by freshman Dina BiBlasio (Norwalk, Conn.).

Western New England closed the gap to one (6-5) with an unearned run in the sixth inning, but the Bantams held on late to secure the win.

The Golden Bears were able to salvage a split with their 5-4, walkoff victory over Farmingdale State in the second game of the day.

Junior Carlie Moss (Delmar, N.Y.) put the Golden Bears ahead 1-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, but the Rams utilized RBI singles from freshmen Mirren O'Mahony (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) and sophomore Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Bears loaded the bases before a pair of Farmingdale State errors allowed three runs to score, giving Western New England a 4-3 edge.

The Rams tied the contest in the top of the sixth on Clark's second RBI single of the game, but another Farmingdale State error in the eighth proved costly as sophomore Emilie Decker (Pattersonville, N.Y.) came in to score the game-winning run.
