Western New England Wraps up Spring Break Trip with Wins over Framingham State & Rutgers-Camden

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 22, 2019) – The Western New England University softball team wrapped up its 12-game spring break trip with wins over Framingham State University and Rutgers-Camden on Friday at Hancock Park.
The Golden Bears overcame a five-run deficit to defeat Framingham State 7-5 in the first contest of the day, before downing Rutgers-Camden 5-3.
Western New England 7, Framingham State 5
The Rams put all five of their runs on the board in the top of the first inning, as sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) recorded an RBI single, freshman Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.) added a two-run double, and two additional runs came in to score on a Western New England error.
The Golden Bears got two runs back in the top of the third and one in the fifth, before taking the lead with a three-run sixth. Freshman Jamie Cookingham (Warner, N.H.) got it started with a single to right center, and sophomore Allie Buzzeo (Stamford, Conn.) doubled to right center before junior Carlie Moss (Delmar, N.Y.) tied the contest (5-5) with a two-run double to left. Two batters later, junior Sydney Pounds (Milford, Mass.) reached on an error that allowed Moss to score the go-ahead run.
Western New England tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, and the Rams stranded two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning as the Golden Bears held on for the win.
Junior pitcher Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.), who came on in relief of sophomore Heather Hassler (Oxford, Conn.) in the first inning, earned the win after striking out four batters and surrendering one unearned run over 6.2 innings.
Western New England 5, Rutgers-Camden 3
The Golden Bears got off to a fast start with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as junior Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) and Cookingham both recorded RBI singles, and Pounds scored on a Rutgers-Camden error.
Cookingham then drove in her second run of the game in the second inning as Western New England extended its lead to 5-0.
In the top of the third, Rutgers-Camden scored three runs to close the gap to 5-3. Freshman Jordan Howey (Gloucester City, N.J.) walked with one out, before scoring on a two-out double by junior Marissa Beebe (Barrington, N.J.).
Sophomore Sarah Byrnes (Cherry Hill, N.J.) added an RBI double, and came in to score on a passed ball.
The Golden Bears held off the Scarlet Raptors the rest of the way, however, to secure their third consecutive victory.

Western New England (7-5) is off until next weekend, when the Golden Bears travel to Boston for doubleheaders against Suffolk and Wentworth on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
