Women’s Wrestling Wraps Up 2022-23 Season at NCWWC Region I Championships

ERIE, Pa. (February 18, 2023) – The Western New England women's wrestling team finished their inaugural campaign on Saturday afternoon at the NCWWC Region I Championships, hosted by Gannon University. The Golden Bears placed 12th in the 12 team event and saw two of their own take 8th place in their respective weight classes. 

How it Happened:

Olivia Amaral placed 8th in the 109 lb. weight class after collecting two victories on the day. Amaral would automatically be moved into the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket after picking up a bye in the first round. Amaral would fall to Izabella Frezzo of NJCU to move into the consolation bracket. In the bracket, Amaral would take another bye to pick up an automatic win to the consolation bracket third round. Amaralwould place 8th overall in the 109 lb. weight class. 

In the 116 lb. weight class, Victoria Orender would take her first win of the afternoon on a bye, heading straight to the quarterfinal round. Orender would fall short in the QF session, being defeated via fall. The first year would jump back into the second round of the consolation bracket, picking up a 9-8 decision victory over Bella Serrano of NJCU to continue to move on. In the end, Orender finished the day with two wins, taking 8th place in the event. 

WNE's Kendall Branchaud wrestled in the 136 lb. weight class, though fell short on the afternoon. 

This wraps up the 2022-23 season for the Golden Bears women's wrestling program in their inaugural season.
