Field Hockey Comes Up Short to UNE 4-3

BIDDEFORD, Maine (September 25, 2021) – The Western New England field hockey team traveled to conference rival University of New England earlier today and came up just short falling 4-3 to the Nor'Easters.

Records:

  • University of New England: 4-4, 2-0 CCC
  • Western New England: 3-3, 1-1 CCC

How It Happened:

The Nor'Easters were first on the board with a goal in the first quarter to lead 1-0 after the first 15 minutes of play. The Golden Bears responded just over six minutes into the second quarter when Sarah Johnston received the pass from Ali Martin with her back to the goal. Johnston turned and lifted her shot into the net to tie the game 1-1.

Just over two minutes later the Nor'Easters scored their second goal and then tallied a third right before the half to lead 3-1 at halftime. The Golden Bears opened the third quarter with a goal just three minutes into play when Emily Campbell collected the rebound off the pads and redirected the ball into the cage to get the Golden Bears within one (3-2). Western New England was the only team to score in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter at the 51st minute of play, Taylor Klesyk lifted a shot toward the cage that Johnston jumped and redirected the ball into the cage to tie the game 3-3. In the final seconds of the game the Nor'Easters snuck a shot into the back of the cage and won the game 4-3.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears were outshot by the Nor'Easters 17-8 in the game while the University of New England recorded 12 penalty corners to the Golden Bears' two.
  • Sarah Johnston scored two goals in the game while Emily Campbell recorded the other goal for the Golden Bears.
  • Taylor Klesyk and Ali Martin tallied an assist each in the game.
  • Zoey Wexler took the loss in the net recording seven saves.
