Field Hockey Takes Care of Lyons 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 7, 2021) – Western New England hosted non-conference foe Mount Holyoke tonight for an under the lights game at Golden Bear Stadium where the Golden Bears came out victorious 3-1.

Records:

  • Mount Holyoke: 2-7, 1-3 NEWMAC

How It Happened:

The Golden Bears took control early dominating the play on their half of the field recording six shots and tow penalty corners in the first 11 minutes. Mount Holyoke had a fast break down to their end of the field that resulted in the first goal of the game at 11:46 in the first quarter. The first quarter ended with the Lyons leading 1-0.

The second quarter was evenly matched with neither team generating much offense. In the final 30 seconds of the first half the Golden Bears generated some offense earning their first penalty corner of the second quarter. With one second remaining Western New England earned another penalty corner and recorded three more after the buzzer went off. On the last corner, Ali Larochelle fired a hard shot that was saved while Emily Campbell picked up the rebound to redirect the ball between the goalkeeper's legs to tie the game 1-1 with no time on the clock. The Golden Bears headed into halftime tied 1-1 with the Lyons.

The Golden Bears started the third quarter with a fast break led by Sarah Johnston down the field. Sent the cross through the circle that wasn't touched for Larochelle to pick it up and redirect the ball into the goal for the Golden Bears second goal just over two minutes into the third quarter for Western New England to lead 2-1. The Golden Bears defended against the Lyons for seven minutes of the third quarter due to five-yard penalties that resulted in cards. The third quarter ended with Western New England leading 2-1.

A penalty corner in the first minute of the fourth quarter gave the Golden Bears another scoring opportunity. Carly-Anna Barba sent a shot at the goal that was saved that set up Taylor Klesyk to receive the rebound and send the ball into the far-right corner of the cage for the Golden Bear's third goal of the game. Western New England now led 3-1 with just over 14 minutes to play. At the 11-minute mark the Golden Bears earned a penalty stroke that they were unable to convert on. The Golden Bears kept up the pressure the remainder of the fourth quarter keeping the ball on their offensive 50. The buzzer went off and the Golden Bears earned the 3-1 win over Mount Holyoke.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears outshot the Lyons 22-6 while recording 11 penalty corners to the Lyons' five.
  • Emily Campbell earned the Golden Bears first goal of the game while Ali Larochelle earned the game-winning goal while also tallying an assist. Taylor Klesyk scored the final goal for Western New England.
