Western New England Picks Up 5-2 Non-Conference Win Over Framingham State

Green leads Golden Bears with two goals

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 6, 2018) –
The Western New England University ice hockey team skated to a 5-2 victory over Framingham State University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Olympia Ice Center. 

Top Performers
• Sophomore forward Andrew Green (Plainview, N.Y.) bookended Western New England's five-goal performance, as he found the back of the net in the first and third periods.
• Junior forward Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.) recorded a goal and an assist, while junior defenseman Edmond Rogers (Creve Coeur, Mo.) and freshman defenseman Adamo Giacomin (Richmond Hill, Ont.) tallied two assists each.

• Senior forward Tyler Colacchio (Bellingham, Mass.) and freshman defenseman Walker Hamilton (Anchorage, Alaska) both scored for Framingham State.

Game Review
After over 13 minutes of scoreless action, Green staked the Golden Bears to a 1-0 lead when he drove down the right side of the ice and buried a shot past Framingham State sophomore netminder Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.). Western New England dominated the first period with a 20-4 shot advantage in the frame.

The Golden Bears capitalized on a power play opportunity to double their advantage 7:23 into the second period, when Giacomin fired a shot from the point and Beck tipped it past Harney. Junior forward Stefan Koproske (Simsbury, Conn.) added another goal four minutes later as Western New England led 3-0 after two periods.

Framingham State broke through at the 1:26 mark of the third period on Colacchio's second goal of the season, but Western New England got it right back just over three minutes later, as O'Dea registered his ninth of the year with assists from Giacomin and senior captain Matt Smethurst (Rexford, N.Y.). Each team would tally one more goal later in the period as Hamilton scored at the 16:29 mark and Green netted his second of the game on a deflection 19 seconds later.

Notes
• Western New England outshot Framingham State 46-21, but the Rams held a 36-32 edge in the faceoff circle.
• Junior goaltender Kevin Gollmer (Flourtown, Pa.) finished with 19 saves in net.
• The Golden Bears scored on two of their five power play chances.

Up Next
Western New England (5-8-1) will be on the road for its next three games, including a pair of non-conference contests at Kings College and Bryn Athyn College next Tuesday and Wednesday in Pennsylvania. Framingham State (2-9-2) returns home to host Worcester State next Thursday.
