Men’s Ice Hockey Slipped Up by Curry 3-1

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 5, 2021) – The Western New England men's ice hockey team scored the game's first goal just 36 seconds into the contest, though they were unable to add to their mark as the Curry College Colonels grabbed the next three goals in the game to take the 3-1 win over WNE. 

Records: 

  • Western New England: 1-1 (0-1 CCC)
  • Curry College: 3-0 (1-0 CCC)

How it Happened: 

The Golden Bears opened conference play on got the start they were looking for as Damien Dangueuger took a quick wrist shot from the point that got past the glove of Reid Cooper and into the net to give WNE the early 1-0 lead. Sam Mitchell would credit the assist on the Dangueuger tally.  Dangueuger grabs his second career goal with the Golden Bears. Western New England Curry would continue to apply pressure of both goaltenders, though both Cooper and Colten Lancaster stood tall for their respective teams. Curry would get on the board late in the period after an unassisted tally from Alex Ochterbeck to move into the intermission even at one. Curry took the shots advantage 13-8 in the opening 20 minutes. 

Both the Golden Bears and Colonels would take their share in penalties, racking up seven in the first two periods combined. Neither team would be able to capitalize on their second period power play chances, though Curry College netted their second goal of the game after Eetu Selanne was able to grab a loose puck and sent it over to Timmy Kent who put the puck off Lancaster and into the net to give Curry the 2-1 lead. Curry took 15 shots in the second period to Western New England's 11. 

The Golden Bears would be stopped in the second period taking just two shots on goal to Curry's 12. Eelis Laaksonen would score Curry's third and final goal of the game off assists from Alexander Bouchard and Michael Snow. The Golden Bears would drop their first game of the season, and first conference game of the year. 

Inside the Crease:

  • Colten Lancaster came away with 37 saves in the loosing effort. Lancaster has collected 77 saves through two games with WNE this season. 
  • Billy Hefferle went 14/21 in the faceoff circle, tops on the Golden Bears. Eelis Laaksonen won 7/10 faceoffs for Curry. 
  • Curry's Reid Cooper turned away 20 saves on the Western New England 21 shot attempts.
