Claflin scores game-tying goal in 89th minute
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 15, 2018) – The Western New England University men's soccer team used a late goal to force overtime in an eventual 1-1 draw with Endicott College on Saturday afternoon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both teams at Suprenant Field.
Top Performers
Junior Brendan Clafin (Burlington, Mass.) collected the lone goal for the Golden Bears late in the second half to force overtime. Juniors Ty Champagne (Watertown, Conn.) and Corey Brown (Somers, Conn.) both assisted on the play.
For Endicott, junior forward Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio) played aggressive with two shots on goal, including one that he finished to give the Gulls an early lead.
Game Review
In the early part of the first period, the Gulls would strike first courtesy of Couchot, who danced past the Golden Bear defense for an unassisted goal. For the next 66 minutes, the score remained 1-0 in favor of Endicott.
At the 88:43 mark, Champagne lost a defender and chipped the ball into the box, where Corey Brown headed it to Clafin, who finished in front of the net, tying the score at 1-1.
In overtime, physical defense prevented either team from earning a deciding goal. In the second extra frame, both teams had their chances, but came up short. A skirmish in front of the net in the 103rd minute led to a Gulls shot, which was saved by Sam Brewer.
At the 108-minute mark, the Golden Bears took their shot off a corner kick and were unable to finish. After 90 minutes of regulation and two ten-minute overtime periods, the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
Notes
• Western New England edged Endicott in shots, 13-9. Both teams put six attempts on target.
• Eight of Western New England's 19 goals this season have been scored by newcomers, including three from Claflin.

On September 18, Western New England will travel to Bard College for a Tuesday night showdown with the Ravens. Endicott will face WPI in Worcester.
