WNE finishes 2018 campaign with 25-18 record

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (May 13, 2018) –
The Western New England University softball team wrapped up its 2018 campaign on Sunday at the NCAA Tournament regional at Cole Field on the campus of Williams College. The Golden Bears completed Saturday's suspended contest with a 6-5, 11-inning victory over Husson, before falling to Amherst 7-2 in nine innings. 

WNE 6, Husson 5 (11 Innings)
Western New England held leads of 2-0 and 4-2 on Friday before the game was halted with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Husson had runners on first and second base with no outs when the action resumed today, but the Golden Bears were able to escape the jam unscathed.

Neither team scored over the next four frames, before Western New England put two runs on the board in the 11th. Sophomore Mallory Donelan (Mineola, N.Y.) got it started with a single up the middle, and senior Jenn Luba (Plymouth, Conn.) followed with an RBI double to left center before sophomore Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) added an RBI groundout later in the frame.

Husson got one run back in the bottom of the 11th on an RBI double by junior Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine), but Kistner struck out the final batter to seal the win for the Golden Bears.

 Amherst 7, WNE 2

Top Performers
• Sophomores Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) and Carlie Moss (Delmar, N.Y.) had two hits each for the Golden Bears, while Kistner came through with a clutch two-run homer in the sixth inning to tie the contest.

• Amherst was led by sophomore Andrea Sanders (Bernardsville, N.J.), who went 4-for-5 at the plate with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
• Freshman Audrey Hansen (Carmel, Ind.) posted a 3-for-4 effort with a triple and one RBI, while classmate RonnieMarie Falasco (Broomall, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a home run.

Game Review
Amherst jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kate Kopatic (Houston, Texas), and the Mammoths doubled their advantage in the fourth when Falasco hit a solo homer over the center field fence.

With the Golden Bears trailing by the same margin in the sixth, Kistner tied the contest with a two-run shot to left field.

Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings, but the Mammoths put five runs on the board in the ninth. Freshman Alyson Plaman (Bloomington, Minn.) put Amherst ahead with a two-out, RBI single, and Sanders delivered a bases-clearing triple three batters later before Hansen capped the big frame with another RBI single.

At the conclusion of the regional, Donelan and Kistner were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Western New England sees its season come to a close with a 25-18 record. The Golden Bears captured their second Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title at Endicott College last weekend.
