Golden Bears Roll to 69-43 Road Win at Wentworth

Western New England outscores Leopards 42-23 in second half

BOSTON, Mass. (February 13, 2018) – The Western New England University women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to earn a 69-43 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Tansey Gymnasium. 

Top Performers
• Sophomore guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the Golden Bears with a team-high 14 points to go with four rebounds, four steals and one assist. Farrell shot 5-of-11 from the field, including 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, and made all three of her free throw attempts.
• Senior guard Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) also scored in double figures with 13 points and five assists, while sophomore forward Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) finished with eight points and four boards and freshman forward Emily Scurka (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

• Wentworth freshman forward Stephanie Mini (Topsfield, Mass.) made 4-of-8 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws on her way to a game-high 16 points. Mini also recorded four rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.
• Senior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds, four assists and one steal for the Leopards.

Game Review
Leading by seven at halftime, Western New England was able to break the game open in the third quarter on its way to a comfortable victory.

The Golden Bears opened up a ten-point advantage when Farell completed a three-point play just over a minute into the period, and a layup by Gilhool at the 4:28 mark capped a 9-0 run as Western New England established a 14-point lead (36-22).

The Golden Bears outscored the Leopards 21-9 in the frame and held a 19-point cushion (48-29) heading into the fourth.

Western New England continued to pull away over the final ten minutes of action, as eight different players scored and the Golden Bears shot 50 percent (10-for-20) from the field.

Wentworth led 6-2 following a layup by Sabino three minutes into the contest. Western New England pulled ahead on a Carlson layup with 2:50 left in the opening quarter, and the Golden Bears held a 13-9 edge after ten minutes.

Despite shooting just 29.4 percent (5-of-17) in the second period, Western New England was able to add to its lead. After the Leopards pulled to within two (18-16) with 4:29 on the clock, O'Neill drained a pair of three-pointers late in the frame to help the Golden Bears establish a 27-20 advantage at the break.

Notes
• Western New England shot 40.3 percent (27-of-67) from the field, while limiting Wentworth to 33.3 percent (17-of-51) shooting. The Leopards were unable to connect on any of their 13 three-point attempts.
• The Golden Bears held a commanding 51-28 rebounding advantage. Sophomore Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) led the way with nine boards, while classmate Alyssa Stefanelli (Chicopee, Mass.) grabbed eight in 24 minutes off the bench.
• Western New England's 26-point triumph marks its second 20+ point win this season, with both coming against Wentworth. The Golden Bears also defeated the Leopards by 26 points (83-57) on January 16 in Springfield.
