Golden Bears Shut Out Gordon, 2-0

Emmert, Dixon score 49 seconds apart early in second half

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 24, 2016) – The Western New England University women's soccer team scored a pair of goals early in the second half, earning a 2-0 shutout victory over Gordon College this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
• Senior forward Samantha Emmert (Hyde Park, N.Y.) snapped the scoreless tie in the 50th minute with the goal that would stand as the game-winner.
• Junior midfielder Danielle Dixon (Plainville, Conn.) found the back of the net less than a minute later, doubling Western New England's lead. 
• Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) notched a six-save shutout, her third clean sheet of the season.

• Freshman forward Lexi Potter (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) led the Gordon offense with a team-high two shots on goal.

Game Review
• After being outshot 5-1 over the first 45 minutes, Western New England broke through with the first goal of the contest 4:37 into the second half. Graduate student forward Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) played a cross in to Emmert, who beat Gordon freshman goalkeeper Kali Denty (Marshfield, Mass.) for her second goal of the season.  
• Just 49 seconds later, Dixon collected a loose ball in the penalty area and buried a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead.
• Gordon put five shots on target and took six corner kicks over the final 30 minutes of action, but the Fighting Scots were unable to get anything past Veilleux as Western New England improved to 2-1 in CCC play.

Notes
• Veilleux made all six of her saves in the second half.
• Gordon outshot the Golden Bears 13-5 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
• Norden, Dixon and Emmert led Western New England with one shot on goal each.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, as Western New England (4-5-1, 2-1 CCC) hits the road for a non-conference contest at Smith, and Gordon (3-3-1, 1-1-1 CCC) returns home to host Colby-Sawyer.
