Western New England Rallies Past Calvin in Second Half, 15-14

Ruby notches game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. (March 22, 2019) – The Western New England University women's lacrosse team overcame a six-goal halftime deficit to earn a 15-14 victory over Calvin College on Friday morning at Dever Park.

Top Performers
Western New England was led by freshman attack Hannah Jarvis (Westfield, Mass.), who produced a game-high six points with three goals and three assists.

Junior attack Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored five goals, including the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining, while freshman midfielder Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.) chipped in with three goals.

Calvin senior attack Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich.) paced the Knights with a team-high four goals on eight shots, while junior attack Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich.) added three goals.

Game Review
Calvin opened up a 4-0 lead over the first seven minutes of the contest, with goals from seniors Skylynn Gyuro (Warwick, N.Y.) and Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Mesman, and junior Jaimie Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich.).

Jarvis got the Golden Bears on the board with a free position goal at the 20:22 mark, but the Knights answered with a 3-0 run to extend their advantage to 7-1 midway through the half.

After goals from Jarvis (14:24) and sophomore Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) (13:06) got the Golden Bears back to within four (7-3), Calvin reeled off four straight goals, including three from Schneemann, to push its lead to eight (11-3).

Jarvis and freshman Liz Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) found the back of the net late in the half, but Western New England faced an 11-5 deficit at the break.

The Golden Bears trailed by the same margin (12-6) following Schneemann's fourth and final goal with 21:28 remaining in the contest.

Western New England took control from there, as a Vitka free position goal at the 18:50 mark sparked a 6-0 run that saw the Golden Bears tie the contest 12-12 with 10:36 to play.

Calvin briefly regained the lead (13-12) on a Drew Jansma (Holland, Mich.) free position strike with 9:05 remaining, but the Golden Bears pulled back ahead (14-13) courtesy of goals from Ruby (7:44) and senior Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) (5:10).

Mesman scored an unassisted goal at the 3:33 mark to tie the contest for the final time, before Ruby notched the game-winner with 30 seconds to play.

• Western New England outshot Calvin 36-29, including 24-9 in the second half.
• The Golden Bears held an 18-13 advantage in draw controls, led by Mazza, who secured a game-high six draws.
• Ruby leads Western New England with 25 points (18 goals, 7 assists) this season.
