Lemire Highlights Four All-CCC Selections for Golden Bears
Lemire (1st Team), Ruby (2nd Team), Breen (3rd Team) & Marchant (3rd Team) earn All-CCC accolades
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 26, 2019) – Four members of the Western New England University women's lacrosse were honored when the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) announced its major award winners and All-CCC selections on Friday morning.
Junior defender Madison Lemire (Ellington, Conn.) earned an All-CCC first team selection, while junior attack Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) was named to the All-CCC second team. Senior attack Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) and sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) collected All-CCC third team accolades.
Lemire anchored Western New England's defensive unit this season, starting all 17 contests and recording a team-high 35 caused turnovers, good for fourth in the CCC. She also paced the Golden Bears with 49 ground balls and 62 draw controls, which rank fourth and tied for eighth in the conference, respectively.
Ruby followed up a strong sophomore season with an even better junior campaign, as she compiled a team-high 61 points (9th in CCC) with 40 goals and 21 assists. Ruby had at least one point in all but one contest, with 13 multi-point performances. She produced 5+ points on seven occasions, including a nine-point effort (four goals, five assists) in Western New England's 20-12 victory over Salve Regina on Wednesday. Ruby is now a two-time All-CCC honoree following her third team selection as a sophomore last season.
Breen was also a key offensive contributor for the Golden Bears this season with 48 points on 38 goals and ten assists. She turned in 11 multi-point performances in 16 games played, and surpassed the 100-goal mark for her career in Wednesday's victory over the Seahawks. Breen earns All-CCC honors for the second straight season after landing on the third team last spring.
Marchant garners All-CCC recognition for the first time following her first season as a starter. The sophomore posted a 13.11 goals against average, good for fourth in the CCC, to go with a .449 save percentage, the fifth-best mark in the conference. Marchant's 167 total saves ranked second among 23 CCC goalkeepers that saw action in the cage this season.
Western New England (9-8, 4-4 CCC), which earned the No. 5 seed in the CCC Tournament, will be on the road for the quarterfinal round at No. 4 seed Curry College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
