Western New England Sweeps CCC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 25, 2019) – The Western New England University women's lacrosse team swept the Commonwealth Coast Conference's (CCC) weekly awards, which were announced by the league office on Monday.

Sophomore Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) was named the CCC Offensive Player of the Week, while junior Madison Lemire (Ellington, Conn.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors and freshman Liz Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was recognized as the Rookie of the Week.

The Golden Bears went 3-0 last week with non-conference victories over Farmingdale State (19-13) and Calvin College (15-14) in Florida on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, and a 21-10 CCC win over Wentworth in Boston on Sunday.

Miller paced the Western New England offense with a team-high 15 points (nine goals, six assists) over the three-game stretch. She tallied a career-high seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) against Farmingdale State, and followed that performance up with one goal, one assist and four draw controls in the win over Calvin. Miller capped the week by scoring a career-high six goals and adding an assist as the Golden Bears opened CCC play with a victory over the Leopards.

Lemire caused a team-high seven turnovers and also contributed with ten draw controls and ten ground balls on her way to Defensive Player of the Week honors. Through seven games this season, she leads the team in all three statistical categories with 30 ground balls, 30 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers.

Mazza earns Rookie of the Week accolades for the second time this season after compiling nine points (seven goals, two assists), 15 draw controls and five ground balls last week. She scored three goals to go with three draw controls and two ground balls against Farmingdale State, before totaling one goal, one assist and six draws against Calvin. In the final game of the week, Mazza again secured six draws while contributing offensively with three goals and one assist.

Western New England (4-3, 1-0 CCC) will look to extend its winning streak to five games on Wednesday, when the Golden Bears host Roger Williams at 4 p.m.
