SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 5, 2019) – The Western New England University women's soccer team built a three-goal lead less than 15 minutes into the contest and held off Nichols College to earn a 3-2 victory over the Bison on Saturday morning in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Suprenant Field.
Top Performers
Western New England utilized three different goal scorers as juniors Lauren Leblanc (Belchertown, Mass.) and Kristin Decost (Hudson, N.H.) and sophomore Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) all found the back of the net.
Nichols graduate student Meghan Dunn (Dudley, Mass.) and sophomore Amalia Sessoms (Manchester, Conn.) both scored for the visitors.
Game Review
Western New England opened the scoring just under seven minutes into the contest, as Leblanc buried a loose ball into the net following a corner kick.
Two minutes later, the Golden Bears doubled their advantage when a throw in by junior Christina Sordi (Bethlehem, Conn.) reached the box and Decost flicked a shot past Nichols sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Marcantonio (North Smithfield, R.I.).
Western New England capped its scoring surge in the 15th minute, as Bruehwiler shook off a Nichols defender just outside the box and fired a shot out of the reach of Marcantonio and into the net.
The Bison got on the board in the 26th minute, when Dunn converted a penalty kick opportunity after the Golden Bears were whistled for a hand ball in the box.
Western New England led 3-1 at halftime, but Nichols cut its deficit to one with 30 minutes to play in regulation on Sessoms' unassisted strike.
The Golden Bears were able to maintain their 3-2 edge the rest of the way, however, to secure the victory.

• Western New England has scored seven goals over its last two games after being limited to five goals in its previous seven matches.
• The Golden Bears outshot the Bison 24-12 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
