Western New England Opens Season with Sixth Place Finish at Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational

Senior Meagan Dias paces Golden Bears, finishing 28th in 21:11

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (September 1, 2018) – The Western New England University women's cross country team ran to a sixth place finish on Saturday at the season-opening Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational, hosted by Fitchburg State University at the Doyle Conservation Center. 

Western New England posted a team score of 172 to finish sixth in the nine-team field. Worcester State took the team title with a score of 41, while Springfield College (42) and Mount Holyoke (79) placed second and third. Unattached runner Kate Edwards was the top individual finisher, as she completed the five-kilometer course in 19:15.

Top Performers
Senior captain Meagan Dias (Ludlow, Mass.) paced the Golden Bears, as she crossed the finish line 28th overall in the 109-runner field with a time of 21:11.

Making her return to the Western New England lineup after not running last fall, junior Brooke Townsend (Portland, Conn.) placed 30th and clocked in at 21:16.

Sophomore Samantha Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.) and senior Kaitlin Armstrong (Bolton, Conn.) finished 42nd (21:36) and 49th (21:47), respectively, while junior Edelinda Baptista (Pawtucket, R.I.) earned a time of 23:50, good for 78th overall.
