Townsend Leads Golden Bears at Western New England Invitational

Junior places 15th overall with time of 24:08

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 13, 2018) – The Western New England University women's cross country team turned in a seventh place finish at the program's annual Invitational on campus Saturday morning.

The Golden Bears posted a team score of 170 on their way to seventh place in the 12-team field. Divison I Harvard University won the team title with a score of 34, while the University of New England (70) and Eastern Connecticut State (89) rounded out the top three. Harvard's Kathryn Gillespie was the top overall finisher as she completed the six-kilometer course in 21:24.

Junior Brooke Townsend (Portland, Conn.), the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Runner of the Week, again paced the Golden Bears with her 15th place finish in the 122-runner field with a time of 24:08.

Senior Meagan Dias (Ludlow, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.) finished just two spots apart in 32nd and 34th place, respectively. Dias clocked in at 24:46, while Lewis turned in a time of 24:49.

Senior Kaitlin Armstrong (Bolton, Conn.) posted a time of 25:57, good for 44th overall, and classmate Ashley Benedict (East Moriches, N.Y.) placed 67th in 27:08.
