Golden Bears Sweep CCC Awards Following 6-0 Week in Florida

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 26, 2018) – Western New England University swept the Commonwealth Coast Conference's (CCC) weekly baseball awards following the team's 6-0 showing in Florida last week, the CCC office announced on Monday afternoon.

Junior outfielder Joe Cassella (Wallingford, Conn.) was named the CCC Player of the Week, while senior right-hander Jake Kawiecki (Burlington, Conn.) earned Pitcher of the Week honors and freshman right-hander Clay Tucker (Chelmsford, Mass.) was recognized as the Rookie of the Week.

Cassella was a key contributor on offense for the Golden Bears, as he hit .417 (10-for-24) with two doubles, one triple and ten RBI. He recorded at least one hit and one RBI in all six contests with a trio of multi-hit efforts, in the process extending his hitting streak to nine games.

Kawiecki improved to 2-0 this season after matching his career-high with eight strikeouts while allowing just one earned run on six hits over five innings of work in Western New England's 5-3 win over St. Olaf on Saturday.

Making his first career start on Tuesday, Tucker surrendered just one unearned run on three hits over five scoreless frames as the Golden Bears defeated New Paltz, 14-1.

Western New England (9-3), which went 7-1 overall at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, is scheduled to host No. 1 ranked UMass Boston at Trelease Park on Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
