Bob Hamel Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

CoSIDA Release

Southwick, Mass. native recognized for combined athletic and academic performance

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 10, 2018) –
Junior left-handed pitcher Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) of the Western New England University baseball team has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced on Thursday.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Academic All-America ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in June.

Hamel is one of two pitchers to earn a spot on the District 1 Team, which includes players from Division III baseball programs in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He is also one of two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball student-athletes to make the 11-player team, along with Endicott senior infielder Michael DeDonato.

An electrical engineering major with a 3.83 cumulative grade point average, Hamel has been named to the WNE Dean's List on multiple occasions while also earning CCC All-Academic honors. He is set to intern with BAE Systems this summer.

In addition to his strong academic performance, Hamel has also excelled on the mound this spring. The junior is 5-0 in ten appearances (five starts) with four complete games and four saves. He has a 0.83 earned run average with 39 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of work.

Hamel has piled up an impressive number of accolades over his first three collegiate campaigns, including CCC Pitcher of the Year honors this season. As a freshman, he was named the ECAC New England and CCC Rookie of the Year. He went on to collect D3baseball.com and ABCA All-Region third team recognition as a sophomore last spring, after receiving his second straight All-CCC second team nod.

Western New England (29-13) travels to Newport, R.I. on Friday to take on Salve Regina in the best-of-three CCC Championship series.
