NEWPORT, R.I. (April 7, 2021) – The Western New England University dropped the first game and tied the second game of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at Salve Regina on Wednesday afternoon.
Game 1: Salve Regina 4, Western New England 0 (7 innings)
Sophomore Sean Jamieson had two hits for the Golden Bears. Senior Kevin Hummer threw three strikeouts.
Tyler Cannoe hit a three-run home run for the Seahawks.
The game was even until the bottom the fourth inning when Cannoe hit his home run to give Salve Regina a 3-0 lead. Jared Beniers hit an RBI single later in the inning to push the lead to four.
Game 2: Western New England 5, Salve Regina 5 (9 innings)
Senior Sebastian Grignano and first-year Aaron Cole each had two hits for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Vincent Caccavale had a double while Jamieson had a triple. The Western New England pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts.
Matt D'Amato had three hits, including a home run, for the Seahawks. Sean O'Malley and Dylan Ketch each had two hits.
The Seahawks went up 2-0 after the first two innings. In the top of the fourth, the Golden Bears scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. They extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning after first-year Henry Schwoerer hit an RBI single. Salve Regina answered in the next half inning by scoring three runs to retake the lead, 5-4. The game remained scoreless until the top of the ninth when a fielding error from the Seahawks sent sophomore Scott West across the plate to tie it at 5-5.
