Sam Olsson Named to New England Football Writers DII/DIII All-Star Team
Milford, Conn. native totaled 73 tackles, seven pass breakups & three interceptions this season
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 27, 2017) – Senior safety Sam Olsson (Milford, Conn.) of the Western New England University football team has been named to the New England Football Writers Division II/Division III All-Star Team, it was announced on Sunday.
Olsson is among 30 players representing 20 different New England based Division II and III football programs to be recognized. The All-Stars will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Tuesday, December 5, at the Montvale Plaza, in Stoneham, Mass.
An All-Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC Football) first team selection this fall, Olsson appeared in nine games for the Golden Bears, totaling 73 tackles, seven pass breakups, three interceptions and a forced fumble.
The Milford, Conn. native opened his season with 12 tackles against Springfield, and two games later finished with 11 stops at RPI. Olsson recorded nine tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in Western New England's comeback victory over Husson on Homecoming Weekend, and he followed that up with picks in the next two games as the Golden Bears defeated St. Lawrence and Endicott. Olsson also made nine tackles and broke up a pair of passes in Western New England's CCC Football title-clinching win over Salve Regina on October 28.
Olsson finished his four-year career at Western New England with 271 tackles (ten for loss), 16 pass breakups, and ten interceptions, the latter of which ranks tenth in program history.
The health sciences major was named an All-New England Football Conference (NEFC) first team selection as a junior last fall after garnering second team accolades as a sophomore in 2015.
Western New England went 8-3 (5-0 CCC Football) this season and captured its third straight conference title (fourth overall) before falling to Delaware Valley in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
