Golden Bears claim sole possession of fourth place in CCC standings

BRISTOL, R.I. (October 3, 2017) –
The Western New England University field hockey team scored three unanswered goals, including the equalizer as time expired in regulation, on its way to a 3-2 victory over Roger Williams University this evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Bayside Field.

Top Performers
• Senior forward Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) led the Golden Bears with two goals, bringing her total to ten this season. DeLima got Western New England on the board in the second half, before tallying the game-winner early in overtime.
• Freshman Haley Daigneault (Longmeadow, Mass.) tipped in the game-tying goal as time expired on a shot by senior Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) following a Western New England penalty corner.

• Senior Jenna Clavette (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore Sydney McCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.) both scored first half goals for the Hawks.

Game Review
• Clavette put Roger Williams in front just under six minutes into the contest with the help of an assist from freshman Emma Stevens (Brewster, Mass.).
• McCarthy doubled the home team's advantage at the 9:50 mark with a shot that found the right corner of the goal.
• DeLima cut Western New England's deficit in half with 13:49 left in the second half when she scored on a feed from classmate Lauren Palmateer (Coxsackie, N.Y.).
• Trailing by the same margin late in regulation, Western New England earned an opportunity to tie the contest with a penalty corner in the closing seconds. Jackson received a pass from senior Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) and fired a shot towards the goal, which Daigneault tipped in to send the game to overtime.
• Roger Williams had a chance to win following a penalty corner early in the extra period, but Western New England senior goalie Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) turned away senior MaryKathryn Slattery's (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) shot to keep the game tied.
• The Golden Bears completed their comeback shortly after Trupe's save, as Carlson brought the ball down the field and sent a pass across the middle to DeLima, who knocked in the game-winner at the 72:35 mark.

Notes
• After being outshot 9-4 over the opening 35 minutes, the Golden Bears held a 10-3 advantage in the second half, and a 15-13 edge overall.
• The two teams entered tonight's contest with matching 2-3 records in CCC play – with its win, Western New England claims sole possession of fourth place in the CCC standings.
• Three of Western New England's last four games have been decided in overtime.
• DeLima ranks fourth in the CCC with 23 points this season.
