Nor'easters score three goals in second and third periods
BIDDEFORD, Maine (November 9, 2018) – The Western New England University ice hockey team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 8 nationally ranked University of New England on Friday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Harold Alfond Forum.
Top Performers
UNE freshman forward Aaron Aragon (Whittier, Calif.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Nor'easters offensively, while junior Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich.) turned in a three-point effort with a goal and two assists.
Sophomore goaltender Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England) made 23 saves en route to his second shutout of the season.
Western New England senior Steve Beck (Milton, N.Y.) recorded a team-high four shots for the Golden Bears.
Game Review
The Nor'easters struck first on the power play late in the first period as sophomore Tyler Seltenreich (Littleton, Colo.) found the back of the net with the help of assists from Bloom and sophomore Jeff Eppright (Barrington, N.J.). UNE led 1-0 after outshooting Western New England 12-11 during the opening 20 minutes of play.
The home team tacked on a trio of second period goals, including two from Aragon, to extend its advantage to 4-0 heading into the second intermission. UNE again used the man advantage to its benefit as Eppright scored on the power play midway through the frame.
The Nor'easters finished strong with three more third period goals, while Churchfield stopped the only three shots he faced in the frame to seal the shutout.
Notes
• Western New England was held in check on the power play as the Nor'easters successfully killed off the Golden Bears' seven man up chances.
• The two teams were even in the faceoff circle with 32 wins each. Senior Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.) led the Golden Bears with a 6-for-8 showing.
