Johnson & Wales Hangs on for 4-3 Win over Golden Bears

Kennedy notches two goals for WNE

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 25, 2018) – The Johnson & Wales University ice hockey team scored three first period goals and hung on late to earn a 4-3 victory over Western New England University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Olympia Ice Center.

Top Performers
Junior forward Corey Kennedy (Clemmons, N.C.) had two goals to lead the Golden Bears offensively, while junior goaltender Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished with 20 saves on 22 shots after coming on for relief duty midway through the first period.

Junior Connor Bechtel (Doylestown, Pa.) and sophomore Max Dorfman (Copper City, Tenn.) both posted multi-point efforts for Johnson & Wales, as Bechtel notched a goal and an assist, and Dorfman handed out two helpers.

Game Review
After freshman Bryan Colburn (Cumberland, R.I.) staked the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead 6:44 into the contest, classmate Jake Glod (Cumberland, R.I.) found the back of the net at the 11:51 mark to make it 2-0.

In the final minute of the period, Johnson & Wales capitalized on a man-up opportunity as Bechtel buried a power play goal with an assist from Dorfman to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage at the first intermission.

Kennedy got the Golden Bears on the board 5:12 into the second period with his first goal of the season, but senior Chad Guderian (Coppell, Tex.) restored the Wildcats two-score edge with 8:26 left in the frame.

Senior Connor Eckenrod (Ebensburg, Pa.) tallied his first goal of the season at the 8:49 mark of the third period to get Western New England back to within two (4-2), and Kennedy notched a power play goal with 2:46 left to make it a one-score game.

The Golden Bears pulled Carducci in favor of an extra skater late in regulation, and despite putting several shots on goal, they were unable to secure the equalizer as the Wildcats held on for the win.

• Western New England outshot Johnson & Wales 39-31, including 16-7 in the third period.
• Kennedy won a team-high seven face-offs for the Golden Bears.
