Women's Basketball Erupts on Offense, Takes Down Wentworth 70-31

BOSTON, Mass. (January 13, 2022) – The Western New England women's basketball team picks up a 70-31 win vs. CCC opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology, gaining their second conference win of the season.

Records:

  • Western New England: 4-9 (2-4 CCC)
  • Wentworth Institute: 2-8 (0-4 CCC)

How It Happened:

The Golden Bears started off the game hot as Shaina Cooney made the first basket of the game and turned around and gave Julia Quinn the assist for a three. Emma Kahn had a block early in the game as well as collecting multiple defensive rebounds that kept WNE up 5-0 early in the first quarter. Kahn also made a basket to put the Golden Bears up 7-2 with 5:50 left to go in the first. Some turnovers let the Wentworth Leopards sneak back within two points of the Golden Bears. Less than three minutes of play, WNE shut out the Leopards. They don't score another basket in the first quarter. Cooney put up two more points and got a steal during that time. Kahn ended the first with a three to put the Golden Bears up 20-9.

Kahn opened the second quarter the same way she ended the first, drilled in another three-pointer. The Golden Bears kept the Leopards scoreless for two minutes and 30 seconds of play in the beginning of the second half. WNE held a 10-point lead until 7:24 left in the quarter when Wentworth shot from inside the paint to cut the lead to 23-14. Quinn went on a streak later in the second quarter. She was able to pick up a steal and a fast-break bucket to put the Golden Bears back up double digits. Quinn then knocked down three three-point shots in a row. WNE went up 36-19 with 2:08 left until halftime. Grace Fisher added three more points for WNE to end the half, Golden Bears up, 39-19.

To add to their 20-point lead, Western New England's first play of the third quarter was a successful layup from Fisher, followed by a free throw off a foul on the play. She had the first buckets of the quarter. Wentworth only scored two free throws in the third quarter. Fisher went 5-6 in field goals, she added 11 points and three rebounds in this quarter, and Quinn added two more to her 14 points of the first half. The third quarter ended 52-21 in favor of the Golden Bears.

The game remained in the Golden Bears hands for the time ran off the clock for the game. Quinn nailed in her final three of the game within a minute of play of the fourth quarter before she and most of the starters went to the bench for the rest of the game. Emma Elrod had a big game, coming off the bench for the Golden Bears. She knocked down quick buckets to add seven more to the WNE's destruction of the Wentworth Leopards. The Golden Bears held Wentworth to only 12 points scored in the second half. They had no answer for WNE who took the game by 39 points, 70-31.
