Women's Basketball Crushes Wentworth, 95-44

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 8, 2022) – The Western New England women's basketball defeated the Wentworth Institute Leopards for the second time on the season with a final score of 95-44.

Records:

  • Western New England: 9-13, 6-8 CCC
  • Wentworth Institute: 3-16, 1-12 CCC

How It Happened:

The game started off very competitively before the Golden Bears quickly ran away with it. Julia Quinn started off the scoring by nailing a three-point shot, but Wentworth responded right back with one of their own. After a couple of foul shots from Quinn, the Leopards went up to a three-point lead, score at 8-5, and it was the last lead that the Leopards had for the game. The Golden bears then hit seven unanswered points. WNE let Wentworth score one more basket at the 5:44 mark during the first quarter, then they did not hit another basket for the remainder of time. The first quarter ended with a score of 28-10 in favor of Western New England.

The Golden Bears' entire team put up stats today and contributed to the defeat of the Leopards. The first points of the second quarter came from Emma KahnSam Bodey swished in a three-point shot and free-throws before Wentworth could put in another basket. WNE played great defense during the quarter and collected three blocks. The Golden Bears hit some big three-pointers, one from Kahn and another from Quinn, before the half ended. WNE kept Wentworth under 10 points in the quarter and the score going into half was 47-16 for the Golden Bears.

The first minute of play in the third was scoreless for both teams. Grace Fisher put up her first points of the quarter at the free-throw line where she hit both shots, and then the Golden Bears continued increasing their lead with a variety of players who put up points. Abby Garaban hit a layup, Alexia Leon had a couple of jump shots, and Colleen Furlong putting up points on the foul-line. They continued to keep Wentworth at ten for the quarter and increased their lead to 34 points. The score going into the fourth was 61-27 with the Golden Bears maintaining the game.

The Wentworth Leopards put up the most points in the fourth quarter at 17 points. The Golden Bears had 30 points from their non-starters in the last quarter of play. Caitlyn Hunt started it off for WNE with a layup. Bodey knocked in another deadly three-pointer to put the Golden Bears up 40 right under eight minutes to go in the game. She hit another one later in the quarter while Emma Elrod had a few baskets from deep in the paint, and Hunt with a huge quarter, putting up eight points. The Golden Bears finished the game with the most points the scored during the season, a high of 95 points to the Leopards 44.

Inside the Numbers:

  • As a team, the Golden Bears shot an impressive 57.4 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from the three, 72.7 percent from the foul line, while grabbing 50 rebounds, 29 assists, six blocks, and four steals.
  • Wentworth Institute had 29.6 percent from the paint, 28.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 42.9 percent from the free throw line while pulling down only 14 rebounds, eight assists, one block, and seven steals
  • The Golden Bears were led by FisherQuinn, and Lindsey Carey who all had 12 points. Fisher also led the team in rebounds with a total of nine for the game.
  • Bodey contributed with 10 more points and Garaban led the team in assist for a total of five.

  • The Golden Bears will be returning to the Alumni Healthful Living Center this Saturday February 12, for their Senior Day. They will host the Nichols College Bisons for a 1 p.m. start time. 
  • The Leopards remain on the road for their next game where they play Suffolk University this Thursday February 10, for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
