Women's Basketball Trounce Curry, 81-31

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 25, 2022) – The Western New England women's basketball team got another home win against the Curry College Colonels with a final score of 81-31.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-10, 4-5 CCC
  • Curry College: 3-12, 0-8 CCC

How It Happened:

A full team's worth of effort went into the Golden Bears win today against the Curry College Colonels. In the first quarter of play for the Golden Bears, the only players to score were Shaina Cooney and Grace Fisher for the first five minutes and 30 seconds. Western New England got off to an 8-0 start before Curry answered with five points of their own. The score was 8-5 at the 5:13 mark in the first. The Golden Bears returned Curry's small run by scoring nine more points while leaving Curry scoreless until 30 seconds left to go in the period. The first quarter ended with a score of 19-10, Golden Bears.

The second quarter was nothing but Golden Bear baskets and great defense. Curry College only scored one basket during the quarter. Cooney had a major huge impact on the half. She earned a double-double in the first half of the game, with 11 of her 15 points, and 12 of her 14 rebounds for the game. Fisher also a major first half contributor. She went 5-9 from the paint totaling 10 points for the half. WNE put up 18 points in the second, halftime score 37-12 WNE. 

Cooney continuing her streak, hit the first basket of the second half. Julia Quinn also hit her first three of the night putting WNE up 30 points before Curry scored a basket. The game remained in the hands of WNE. The Golden Bears kept Curry from scoring for large periods of time while they built up their lead. The Golden Bears had multiple 30-point leads. The non-starters for WNE contributed on the offensive to extend the lead. Sam Bodey had two quick baskets in three minutes of play. The third quarter end score was 55-24.

The was not much of a change in the game for the Golden Bears in the final quarter. The non-starters knocked in 26 points, the most points scored per quarter in the game. Transfer Lilly Hedge made her first Western New England debut with three points and a rebound in her five minutes of play. Everyone on the team played minutes for WNE on the night. The Golden Bears win with an impressive 81-31 final score, leaving the Colonels still winless in the CCC.

Inside the Numbers:

  • As a team, the Golden Bears shot 50.0 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from the three, 54.2 percent from the foul line, while grabbing 54 rebounds, 18 assists, and six steals.
  • Curry College had 20.4 percent from the paint, 17.9 percent from beyond the arc, and 44.4 percent from the free throw line while pulling down 22 rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • The Golden Bears were led by Cooney who had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, plus two assists and one steal in only 20 minutes of play.
  • Fisher added with 11 points seven rebounds and two assist. Garaban led the team in assist, totaling five for the game.

  • The Golden Bears next game is a rescheduled from January 12. They will be on the road to Endicott College for a 7:30 pm tip off on January 27, following Western New England Men's basketball team. 
  • Curry College is also on the road for their next game against CCC opponent Wentworth on January 27 with a 5:30 pm start time.
