West Conn Downs Women’s Lacrosse, 13-5

DANBURY, Conn. (March 10, 2022) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team fell on Thursday night to the Western Connecticut State University Colonels from the Westside Athletic Complex by a final score of 13-5. 

Records:

  • Western New England: 2-2
  • Western Connecticut: 4-0

How it Happened:

The host team was able to rip off the first four goals of the game, getting an early advantage in the contest. Vicky Gracy, Dominique DeMarsico and Alexa Riggio combined for four goals in the opening ten minutes for the Colonels to give them a 4-0 lead. Western New England would capitalize for their first goal while down one player as Anabella Arias would get the first Golden Bears goal of the contest. Western Connecticut would score once more in the quarter, taking a 5-1 lead heading into the second frame. 

West Conn continued to dominate much of the offensive play on the night, though Western New England picked up their only goal of the quarter with 11:12 to play in the second when Emmy Burns ripped her sixth goal of the season into the back of the net. From there, it would be all West Conn to close out the half, picking up goals from Katelyn Contreras, Dominique DeMarsico, and Vicky Gracy to take an 8-2 lead into the break.

West Conn's goal scoring would slow down in the final 30 minutes of the contest, though Western New England would be unable to solve the Colonels defense and goalkeeper Anna Schipf. WNE would get the first goal in the third quarter as the looked to make a comeback in the second half when Arias picked up her second goal of the game, an unassisted tally to move the score to 8-3 in favor of the home team. West Conn would score their only goal of the quarter with five minutes remaining to retake their six-goal lead. Ally Hill would collect her second tally of the season for the Golden Bears, as they found themselves down by five with one quarter remaining. 

The Golden Bears would fall short in the fourth quarter, seeing Western Connecticut score four goals of the quarter as Contreras, Gracy, and DeMarisco scored for the Colonels, sending WCSU into a 13-5 victory over the Golden Bears. Mia Celentano would score the lone goal of the fourth quarter for WNE. 

Inside the Arc:

  • Anabella Arias tallied two of WNE's five goals of the night, leading the Golden Bears with two points. 
  • Western Connecticut outshot the Golden Bears 29-16, including 19-6 on the first 30 minutes of play. 
  • WNE was successful on 21-23 clears and scooped 23 groundballs on the night. 
  • Faith Graveline made one save on the night while Riley Franzo came in relief, making three saves.
