Women’s Lacrosse Nets Season Best 25 Goals in Thumping of Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. (April 9, 2022) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team handled the hosting Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon, after piling on 11 first quarter goals, on their way to a 25-5 win. 

Records:

  • Wentworth Institute: 2-6, 0-3 CCC

How it Happened:

The women's lacrosse team wasted very little time to get on the board in the first quarter, as Kylie Buchanan started off the scoring for the Golden Bears, scoring her 19th goal of the season on an assist from Liz Mazza to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the quarter. WNE tacked on two quick goals as Anabella Arias netted her 24th of the season, while Buchanan scored her second of the afternoon, 20th of the season on an assist from Reilly Miller to give WNE a 3-0 lead. Wentworth would come back for two quick goals as Sarah Galan would score her team leading 32nd goal of the season for the Leopards, while Olivia Murray collected Wentworth's second goal of the game to close the gap, sending WNE to a 3-2 lead. WNE and WIT would trade goals as Samantha Vitka would score for WNE while Sarah Galan would grab her second of the game for the Leopards, giving WNE the one goal lead again. From there, Western New England would score the next seven goals to close out the first quarter. Goals from Ally Ferraro (2), Anabella Arias, Kylie Buchanan, Reilly Miller (2), and Samantha Vitka would close the first quarter of scoring with 14 goals on the board, 11 of them belonging to Western New England. Faith Graveline came away with two saves in the first quarter for the Golden Bears. 

Western New England continued to dominate the second quarter, scoring all eight goals of the quarter, taking a 16-goal lead int the second half. Western New England started the scoring early in the second quarter as Vitka would tally just 18 seconds into the quarter to give WNE a nine-goal lead, at 12-3. A running clock would begin in the contest after the Golden Bears went ahead by ten goals on Anabella Arias's third tally of the afternoon, giving WNE a 13-3 lead. Down the stretch of the second quarter, goals from Arias, Ferraro (2), Buchanan, Mazza, and Madisyn Crotta would give the Golden Bears a massive 19-3 lead after two quarters of play. Abbey Francis would pick up an assist on the Crotta goal, collecting her third point of the season. Wentworth came away with just three shots in the second quarter, two which were saves by Graveline, while one hit the post. Western New England would out score the Leopards 8-0 in the quarter. 

Two goals from Mia Celentano would headline the third quarter as the scoring would cool off for the Golden Bears, as they came away with three goals in the third set of 15 minutes. Western New England would take a 19-goal lead into the fourth quarter of play after Crotta and Celentano would score the three goals of the quarter for WNE. The Golden Bears dominated the possession in the third quarter, allowing one shot on goal to the Leopards, while coming away with nine shots on goal themselves. 

Four goals were scored in the fourth quarter, as Western New England had put the game away early in the contest, breezing over Wentworth for the win. In the quarter, Emmy Burns would get the scoring started on an unassisted tally. Mia Celentano would complete her hat trick, scoring WNE's 24th goal of the afternoon on an assist from the CCC Rookie of the Week, Mariella Biceglia to give Western New England a 21-goal lead. Wentworth would put an end to a streak of 19 straight goals by the Golden Bears by scoring their fourth of the afternoon on a mark from Olivia Murray. WNE would score their final goal of the afternoon when Hannah Richard picked up her first goal of the season and second career goal on an assist from Abbey Francis to give the Golden Bears a 25-4 lead. Wentworth would add one additional goal in the winding minutes of the final frame, ending the game with a score of 25-5 in favor of Western New England. 

Around the Field:

  • Ally Ferraro, Anabella Arias, and Kylie Buchanan all scored four times for Western New England in the win. Buchanan led all scorers with seven points on the afternoon. 
  • Samantha Vitka, and Mia Celentano scored three times each for the Golden Bears, while Vitka added two assisted as well. 
  • The Golden Bears pick up their highest goal total of the season, as 25 with a previous high coming during their spring break trip against Sewanee University of 24 goals. 
  • Western New England goalkeeping, consisting of Faith Graveline, Riley Franzo, and Emily Lake, came away with seven saves in the win for the Golden Bears. Wentworth took a total of 16 shots on goal on the afternoon, while WNE came away with 44.
  • Reilly Miller and Liz Mazza combined for 11 points for the Golden Bears in the win. 
  • Wentworth was eld by Olivia Murray, who scored twice and added an assist for the Leopards.
