Women’s Lacrosse Rolls over SUNY Fredonia

PENSACOLA, Florida (March 17, 2022) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team swept their Florida schedule, taking down the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia by a final score of 18-5. 

Records:

  • SUNY Fredonia: 0-4

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears, who saw graduate student Reilly Miller collect her 100th career goal last time out in Florida, got off to a great start, putting the game away early in the contest. Just 52 seconds into the contest, Miller was able to open the scoring to give the Golden Bears an early 1-0 lead, picking up her 102nd career goal. Western New England would score the first four goals in the contest as four different scorers would find the back of the net, beating Emily Carr. Samantha Vitka would tally 1:06 after the Miller tally, while Hannah Jarvis marched right down the field and scored 13 seconds after the Vitka tally. Anabella Arias would cap off the early 4-0 lead for WNE, scoring with 9:39 remaining in the first quarter to give the Golden Bears the early lead. The Blue Devils would come around for their first tally of the half with just under five minutes to play in the first as Molly McGowan scored to get Fredonia on the board. The Golden Bears would finish off the first quarter with three goals as Kylie Buchanan would pick up her 10th goal of the season on an assist from Madisyn Crota, while Liz Mazza and Miller would end the final 2:45 of the quarter with goal to give WNE a 7-1 lead after the quarter end. Goaltender Faith Graveline made two saves while allowing just one goal in the opening quarter. 

Ten goals in a row for Western New England would give the Golden Bears a huge lead at halftime. To open the quarter, sophomore Ally Ferraro would score her third and fourth goals of the season to quickly put the Golden Bears ahead by eight goals, marking the score at 9-1. Araias, and Jarvis would score back-to-back goals, getting the Golden Bears to running time with 6:45 to play in the second quarter. Mia Celentano would pick up her first goal of the afternoon, the Golden Bears 12th goal, to put Western New England ahead 12-1. Miller closed out the half with a goal to give Western New England a 13-1 lead after 30 minutes of play. WNE outshot the Blue Devils 26-5 through the first 30 minutes of play, including 10-0 in the second quarter, Western New England scooped 14 first half ground balls and turned the ball over just seven times.

SUNY Fredonia would attempt to mount a comeback as they were able to get the first goal of the second half as Molly McGowan credited her second goal of the game and second for the Blue Devils, marking the score at 14-2. Western New England would come alive in the final minutes of the third quarter, as Buchanan and Miller would score on assists from both Jarvis and Vitka to give WNE a 16-2 lead after three quarters of play. The Blue Devils would come through with two quick goals to open the fourth quarter as McGowan would collect her third of the contest, while Julie Culver picked up her first goal of the afternoon for Fredonia, putting the Golden Bears ahead by 13 goals. Jarvis would add an extra tally with 3:34 to play, the final goal of the afternoon for the Golden Bears, as Western New England would come away with the 18-5 win over SUNY Fredonia on Thursday afternoon, 24 hours after their win of Sewane University. 

Inside the Arc:

  • Western New England saw Reilly Miller come away with a season high five goals on the afternoon, taking six shots and scooping one ground ball in the win. 
  • Hannah Jarvis came away with five points as well, scoring three times and picking up two assists. Jarvistook five shots while scooping four ground balls and causing two turnovers in the win. 
  • Ally Ferraro, Anabella Arias, and Kylie Buchanan all came away with two goals each for Western New England in the win. 
  • Three goals for the Golden Bears split time as Faith Graveline would make two saves in the first half of the contest. Riley Franzo would make two saves in the third quarter, while Emily Lake finished out the final 15 minutes of play, making four saves while surrendering just two goals in Western New England's 18-5 win.
  • Western New England caused 11 turnovers in the contest, with Hannah Richard, Hannah Jarvis, and Melissa Shanteler causing two each. 
  • The Golden Bears out scored SUNY Fredonia 13-1 in the first 30 minutes of the game. The Blue Devils came through with four second half goals, while WNE came up with five.
