Holmes (13 kills) and Kornberg (seven aces) set career-highs in win over Suffolk
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (September 9, 2017) – The Western New England University volleyball team posted a 2-1 record in three matches at the Smith College Invitational over the weekend. The Golden Bears fell to Amherst College, 3-0, on Friday night, before defeating Gallaudet University and Suffolk University by matching 3-1 scores on Saturday.

Top Performers
• Sophomore middle blocker Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) led the way for the Golden Bears, hitting .409 with a career-high 13 kills and three blocks.
• Senior captain Brianna Roath (Jackson, N.J.) recorded 24 digs, and sophomore setter Caitlyn Sibiskie (Rockfall, Conn.) dished out 31 assists.
• Senior outside hitter Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.) finished with ten digs, nine kills and a career-high seven service aces.
• Freshman Hannah Fabiano (Litchfield, N.H.) paced the Rams, hitting .435 with 11 kills and nine digs.
Match Review
• Western New England took an early lead on Suffolk in the opening set and didn't trail for the remainder of the frame. The Rams eventually cut their deficit to one (19-18), but senior outside hitter Emmaline Chiodini (St. Louis, Mo.) helped close the door on Suffolk with three late kills.
• Three early aces by Kornberg helped the Golden Bears race out to a 6-0 lead in the second set. Suffolk fought back to claim a 17-16 edge, but a 9-2 run the rest of the way allowed Western New England to take the frame and a 2-0 lead in the match.
• The Rams stayed alive with a come from behind victory in the third set, before the Golden Bears cruised to a ten-point triumph in set four to seal the win.
Notes
• Chiodini finished with eight kills, nine digs and two aces.
• Western New England hit .296 in the fourth set and .194 overall.
• The Golden Bears have won three of their last five matches after starting the season 0-3.
