Field Hockey Falls to Mount Holyoke, 4-2

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (September 26, 2019) – Led by a hat trick from sophomore forward Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.), the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team posted a 4-2 win over Western New England University on Thursday night at the MHC Turf & Track Complex.

Top Performers
Lawrence powered the Lyons offensively with her three-goal effort, while sophomore Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.) also scored for the home team.

Western New England received goals from senior forward Jacqueline Clark (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman forward Emily Campbell (Goffstown, N.H.).

In net, freshman goalkeeper Lexie Hemstock (Cheshire, Conn.) made eight saves for the Golden Bears. Her counterpart, Mount Holyoke senior Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) stopped six shots.

Game Review
Following a scoreless opening frame, Lawrence got the Lyons on the board 2:20 into the second period. Sophomore Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass.) put a shot on net that Hemstock saved following a penalty corner, and Lawrence was able to put back the rebound for the game's opening goal.

Clark evened the score with 5:04 left before halftime. She sent in a penalty corner and then capitalized on a rebound opportunity after sophomore Ali Martin's (South Windsor, Conn.) shot was saved by Turner.

Early in the third quarter, Lawrence found the back of the net on a feed from sophomore Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) to give Mount Holyoke a 2-1 edge. Less than three minutes later, Brooks tallied an unassisted goal to make it a 3-1 game.

Western New England was able to cut its deficit back to one (3-2) on Campbell's first career goal with 5:48 left in the third quarter, but the Golden Bears were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Lawrence completed her hat trick performance early in the fourth quarter, giving the Lyons a 4-2 advantage that would stand as the final score.

• Mount Holyoke outshot Western New England 23-9 and held an 8-2 edge in penalty corners.
• Clark's goal increases her point total to a team-leading 21 this season, which ranks fourth in the CCC.

Western New England (4-4) is off until next Wednesday, when the Golden Bears host Nichols in CCC action. Mount Holyoke (3-4) travels to MIT for a NEWMAC contest on Saturday.
