Western New England Comes Up Short in 3-2 OT Loss to Gordon

Cancellaro & Brown score for Golden Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 6, 2018) - The Western New England University men's soccer team dropped a tightly-contested battle in overtime to Gordon College, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
Juniors Dante Cancellaro (Watertown, Conn.) and Corey Brown (Somers, Conn.) both scored for the Golden Bears. Senior Brendan Siegel (Liberty, N.Y.) assisted on Cancellaro's goal.

In net, senior Sam Brewer (Westford, Mass.) had seven saves.

Gordon received offensive contributions from freshman Jarvin Ramirez (Milton, Ga.), and seniors Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) and  Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.), who all recorded goals in the contest. Burkhart scored the game winner for the Fighting Scots.

Game Review
The first half of play was a stalemate for the full period leaving the score 0-0 at the break.

The game's first goal was scored by Cancellaro following a throw in from Siegel. Off the throw, Cancellaro powered the ball through the Gordon defense to give Western New England a 1-0 lead.

The Fighting Scots would respond with two unanswered goals coming from Ramirez and Beveridge.  In the 72nd minute, Beveridge put Gordon ahead 2-1 off a feed from junior Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.).

Just five minutes later, Brown was able to find the back of the net on his own and tie the game at two apiece.

Gordon would attempt to answer with three chances in the final five minutes, but Brewer was able to save all three.

In the extra period, the Golden Bears opened up with aggressive shots on net that were saved by sophomore Wesley Sprague (Naperville, Ill.). Sprague finished with seven saves.

At the 96:42 mark, Burkhart chipped the ball high to the opposite side of the net just past Brewer for the deciding goal, allowing the Scots to take home the 3-2 victory.

• Gordon outshot the Golden Bears, 17-15.
• Western New England has played in four overtime games this season, with an 0-2-2 record in those contests.

Western New England (7-4-2, 0-2-2 CCC) looks to bounce back on Tuesday, October 9 as the Golden Bears travel to Wentworth for a CCC matchup. Gordon (7-4, 3-0 CCC) will face Endicott College at 7 pm on Tuesday night.
