Western New England Opens Season with 7-2 Loss at Johnson & Wales

Schrader posts 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles

RIVERSIDE, R.I. (September 3, 2018) – The Western New England University women's tennis team was defeated by Johnson & Wales University 7-2 in the Golden Bears' season opener on Monday afternoon at Centre Court Tennis Club.

Top Performers
Junior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was the lone Golden Bear to post a win in singles play, as she earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lauren Torre at No. 2.

In doubles action, junior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and freshman Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-2 triumph against Victoria Pizzulo and Lilly Votta at No. 3.

Match Review
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead through the doubles portion of the match, as Delaney Macchirole and Kourtney Moore topped sophomore Maylene Lapress (Bedford, N.H.) and Schrader 9-7 at No. 1, and the duo of Drew Bobey and Claire Parry defeated senior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and sophomore Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) 8-2 at No. 2.

Johnson & Wales claimed five of six singles matchups to seal the win. Parry came away with a 6-0, 6-4 result over LaPress at No. 1, and Petra Martinelli fell to Macchirole 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

In the fourth position, sophomore Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) was handed a 6-0, 6-0 loss, while Bauer and Janet Martinelli were defeated at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Western New England (0-1) will be back on the road Wednesday afternoon at the University of Northern Vermont-Johnson. Johnson & Wales (2-0) takes on Providence College in a scrimmage on Thursday, before traveling to Endicott on Saturday.
